Wanted: 2016-17 SSS Learning Group Leaders Needed
Applications are due Tuesday, March 29

During your SSS Learning Group sessions have you envisioned yourself as one of the Leaders? Can you see yourself serving as a peer mentor to first-year students? Well, do we have an opportunity for you! SSS is seeking approximately 8 new Learning Group Leaders for the 2016-17 year. You could be one of those Leaders!
To be eligible for the position, you must be:
- Current UW‐Oshkosh student and at minimum, Sophomore Standing, by Fall 2016
- A minimum combined GPA of 2.5 and in “Good Standing” at UW‐Oshkosh
- Must give a one year commitment to this position (fall and spring semesters)
- Able to work 10 hours per week each semester

These small-group sessions, offered by the Reading & Study Skills Center and supported by Differential Tuition, are free to all students. Bring a friend!

- Apply research-based strategies for learning and memory

SSS Scholarships Available
Application deadline is Friday, May 6 @ 4:00 PM
Application materials can be obtained from the SSS website: sss.uwosh.edu/scholarships
Twenty-two $1,000.00 scholarships will be awarded to present SSS students for the 2016-17 academic year
- 15 scholarships will be awarded to students in the traditional SSS program
- 7 scholarships will be awarded to students in the STEM SSS program
In order to be eligible for the scholarships, students must:
1) Currently be 1st or 2nd years student at UW Oshkosh
2) A recipient of the Federal Pell Grant for the 2016-17 academic year
3) 2.5 GPA at the end of the Spring 2016 semester
4) Enrolled in 12 or more credits both the Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 semesters
How to apply:
Be an active participant in SSS or STEM SSS
- Attended the required number of meetings with your SSS advisor
- Participate in the majority of your Learning Group sessions, if applicable
Or
- Attend three campus events and write a summary of each
Complete an SSS Scholarship Application
Write a 2 to 3 page essay addressing specific criteria

Jerry Thomas - Queer Bodies: Sexual Citizenship and The Art of Charles Ray

Using recent nude sculptures of contemporary artist, Charles Ray, Dr. Jerry Thomas will lecture on queer theory and sexual citizenship. Queer bodies in public spaces disrupt sexual norms at the intersections of race, gender, and age. Some works presented in this lecture might not be suitable for children.

The World We Make: Well-Being in 2030

How might the world look roughly 15 years from now if we choose well-being today? While economic prosperity has generally increased, why haven’t happiness and well-being?
How can we decrease the costs related to depression and stress-related disorders that are projected to double to $6 trillion by 2030? How can we learn to be happy, to be kind, and to be grateful?
Along with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the Center is gathering world leaders in science, health care and media to alter humanity’s course by sharing how we can cultivate well-being in ourselves, our communities and the world.

UW Oshkosh Student Shares His Experience with Refugees
Reeve Union, Room 307 (Theater)
Former UWO student and Marine, Andrew Frania, an International Relations student, is speaking about his trip to Greece in search for Syrian refugees.
Frania, who had served in the U.S. military, will share his experiences on the Greek island of Lesvos. Learn learn how volunteers and refugees are using social media to gain the world's attention on human rights. Please come and listen to Andrew’s heart-breaking story and photos he obtained from his trip.
