TRUTH:
Very often what students know about careers is based on what their parents do, or what they see on television or on-line. SHOCKER! They may not have a clear picture of what those jobs entail or what it takes to be successful. Students' ideas about careers can be skewed by negative talk at the end of a long day, or on the other end of the spectrum, by an unrealistic portrayal posted to maximize followers, likes, or fans.
Conversations with REAL people, doing REAL work, in REAL career fields is absolutely invaluable. To hear people say they love their job, but it is not always easy, is invaluable to students developing grit and perseverance; skills they certainly need in life.
I have included several links to videoed interviews with employees working in various careers at various levels. The Career Pathways: Shaping Missouri's Future webinars showcase training programs and apprenticeships, as well as students and workers involved. This is a good conversation starter, which is often all that is needed to get students thinking about their futures.
Thank for your hard work and dedication to students success!
Please share this newsletter with your middle and high school counselors, administrators, and and Career Exploration teachers in your building/district.
