Fall Laptop Contest!
You can earn a FREE refurbished laptop computer . . . if you study 150 hours or more on a distance learning platform from September 1 to January 31.
Distance Learning platforms you can use: My English Lab, ReadTheory, CommonLit, Edmentum, Burlington English, Khan Academy, MobyMax, MyLab (math), Read Works, USA Learns, Vocab A-Z, Paraeducator, NorthStar Online. The hours from all platforms you use will be combined for your total hours.
Hubbs Distance Learning staff will keep track of the hours and notify you in February if you’ve won a laptop. You can also see your distance learning hours in the Student Portal.
Distance Learning hours are entered into the portal at the end of every month. Students can win one laptop per year. If you have any requests or questions about your distance learning platforms, you can contact your teacher or Jessica Ess at jessica.ess@spps.org, or call 612-405-3636.
New Educational Assistant, May Vang - Welcome to Hubbs!
You may have seen a new face at the front desk and in the intake office recently. Her name is May Vang. She was recently hired to help out with registration and intake. She has also been a great help in the area of tech assistance and some behind the scenes work to keep things moving smoothly with the program. Here are some fun facts that we recently found out about her when recently interviewed by a couple of volunteers.
What is your favorite color?
Pink, I think it’s a calm, fun color.
What is your favorite food?
Sushi
What is your go-to order at a coffee/tea shop?
Chai, but I don’t get it very often. I really like sparkling water.
If you had the entire day to yourself and all your work/chores were done, what would you do?
Go outside and read, on the grass. Probably comics.
When is your birthday and is there anything on your wishlist?
May 23, nothing in particular. Maybe a new tablet.
Are you a dog or cat person?
I’m definitely a dog person, I’d say.
What’s your favorite day of the week?
Probably Saturday.
Tell us a little about your background, interests, family.
I’ve spent most of my life in MN, I studied French in school as my major, before working here I worked at the public library, the St Paul public library for two years as a library customer service assistant. I really enjoy helping the public out with whatever, technology, whatever they need.
I graduated from the U of M (University of Minnesota).
What made you want to work at Hubbs Center?
I love working with English language learners, in the past I was an assistant English teacher abroad in France. I also speak French at the advanced level. My mom teaches an online class here and told me about the job opening. My job is the intake educational assistant, so I’ll be helping new students sign up for classes and everything.

If you are having trouble finding an email from your teacher, try this:
1. Type your teacher's name in the search bar to look for an email from them. See the example on the phone here. If you don't find your teacher's email, go to step 2.
2. Click on the three lines at the upper left hand corner next to the search box in your email to search for emails under other labels.
3. Click on Promotions or Spam to see if your teacher's email is there. Many students find the email under the promotions label.
