News you can use from Dena'ina Elementary School
Principal Post
Dear Dena'ina Families,
Our vision here is healthy bodies, active minds and responsible citizens. This month, I want to focus on the 'active minds'.
Fall MAP and AIMSWeb benchmark testing is over and the results are in. You should have received your child's report, along with the Parent's Guide to MAP. Teachers use this data to determine how best to help your child succeed academically. In addition, teams look at the data for the grade level (previous years and current) and create goals for proficiency. I want to share these goals with you and hopefully you notice we are setting the bar high. When you look at the picture of the table below my post, you'll note there are two columns per subject: one is the winter goal and one is the spring goal for the grade level. It indicates what percentage of students we want to be proficient or above based on their current levels.
So how can you help at home? Two things: (1) Focus on reading at home, practicing math facts and spelling words and (2) Attendance - be sure your child is at school every day unless they are sick, and if they do miss school talk to the teachers about making up the work they missed. Of course, ensuring they get plenty of rest, eat healthy meals and get enough exercise is also helpful. Another way to help your child(ren) is to take good care of yourself - we often sacrifice our own rest or health when life is busy!
I look forward to seeing you at Parent/Teacher conferences on November 1st and 2nd. Please read more about conferences below.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Everett

Frequently Asked Questions
REAL is our acronym that stands for Respect for all, Empathy for others, Accept Responsibility and Leadership. These 'tickets' are given out by adults when they notice students doing things that fit these traits. We believe you get more of what you pay attention to, so we strive to focus on the positive behaviors that students exhibit. Every adult, including bus drivers, can give REAL tickets. Students write their name on a ticket and each classroom teacher has a system for drawing tickets to reward students in different ways.
