Kilmer Connections
April 2024
Namwayut --- We Are All One --- Nous Sommes Tous Unis
Greetings Kilmer Community,
On behalf of everyone at Kilmer, welcome back! We hope your family enjoyed the break from school. Planning is underway for Spring Events. Please see below for KPAC Information and school calendar.
The Spring term will be busy for all students. We begin with a focus on athletics and science activities related to Earth Month.
Athletics
Every student will learn tennis basics for the first two weeks back followed by our gymnastics unit during regular PE classes. Outside, practises for Como Lake Relays are underway. MayPole Dance Team continues their practises- only one month until May Day! Finally, Grade 5 Girls are encouraged to join the Mini Rapids Basketball Team with practises beginning this Thursday morning at 8am in the Kilmer Gym.
Earth Month
Over the break, Kilmer was power washed on the outside with new woodchips added to the swings area. Next up will be some student work outdoors with Ms. Roberts preparing our classroom gardens in the courtyard and re-filling the sandbox with the sand that surrounds it. Students will hopefully see butterflies and mason bees over the Spring term as our plants are all food for pollinators this year.
Some classes will also be learning about protecting the nearby streams and creeks to help salmon and other fish thrive in the local area.
Litter Free Lunches
Students will be encouraged to “pack it in & out “ to reduce litter on site. We will explain the contest this week and begin tracking the litter free lunches next week for two weeks. A school prize will be enjoyed by all students once we have demonstrated a good collective understanding of reducing waste to help planet earth and our futures.
Classes for 2024-2025
As we begin to approach the end of the year, planning for next year is starting. Planning and building classes are very comprehensive activities and something we spend a lot of time on at École Kilmer Elementary. We will begin with teachers individually looking at all students learning needs and peer relationships. Once this process is completed, we begin to look at building classes with respect to balancing learning and social-emotional needs and doing our best for each of our students and taking into consideration the rules for class size and composition. If there are specific learning or peer issues that you would like the school to know of, please feel free to write or email Mrs. Roberts a letter and she will include it as a part of the deliberations into our class building process. Specific teacher requests will not be considered in our class building.
After School Programs
Registration for afterschool programs are open. Game Ready will provide a variety of sports programs at the gym and Beyond The Bell will offer Paper Making Projects in the Library. The registration information was sent home in the student planners and is also posted at every school entrance door and on the school website to make it easier for you to register.
Lunch Box Theatre
Spring Lunch Box Theatre begins. Students will be drawn for a spot in the cast of a play that is rehearsed at lunch times and performed on the afternoon of May 22nd.
Warriors Lacrosse Equipment Donation
The Vancouver Warriors recently donated a class set of lacrosse sticks and balls to Kilmer. We will be sending them a thank you card from Kilmer Students. The next game is Western theme night- April 5th and are tickets $15 at Rogers Arena.
A bientôt,
Theresa Roberts, Principal
