Week of March 18, 2019
- During Readers' Workshop this week, we focused on the importance of realizing that reading longer books means we need to keep track of what we are reading. We learned to use post-it notes to write chapter summaries and to note and questions we might have about our readings.
- We started our next reading bend in which we work with a reading partner. Each student has a buddy reader. Buddy readers work together by each reading the same book separately, but conferring with each other to discuss their book, ask questions, and to support each other's reading experience.
- A few books we read, discussed, and used to model reading during read aloud time are: Pinky and the Bully, Minnie & Moo The Case of the Missing Jelly Donut, Nicky's Ghost Crab Hunting Adventure, and Houndsley and Catina.
Writers' Workshop~
- As writers, we learned that writing our opinion means adding more than one reason to persuade our readers. To support our reasons, we need to provide specific examples from the story to reinforce our opinion.
- We wrote a second letter to our 4L buddies giving an opinion about our favorite book. This time we adding more than 1 reason with examples to support each of our reasons.
- We worked with a peer to discuss and edit our opinion letters...offering praise and suggestions to strengthen our writings.
- Our class was very excited to receive a letter back from their 4L buddies in response to the first Opinion Letters we sent them about our favorite books.
- During Grammar, we focused on the 5 main parts of a letter and most importantly, the places we use commas in the heading, greeting, and closing of the letter.
- We also started to learn about reflexive nouns.
Mathematicians~
- As mathematicians, we learned a new game called Basketball Addition. The purpose of the lesson is to practice adding multi-digit numbers as well as adding more than one addend.
- During our math lessons, we learned the importance of using a standard unit of measurement. We used classmates to measure from the front to back of the room. We realized that each student is a different height therefore our measurement would differ based on the students' height.
- To support our measuring lessons, we recalled and reviewed the Metric System and US Customary units of measurement.
- We also started lessons on using various tools to measure objects. The first day, we learned about measuring items using a yard stick. We learned reviewed what an inch is on the ruler and that 12 inches equals 1 foot and 3 feet make one yard. We searched for objects in the room for items that were 1 inch, 1 foot, and 1 yard.
- Then, we learned about the meter stick. We recalled what a centimeter looks like and learned that a meter stick has 100 centimeters. We searched the room for objects that were 1 centimeter, 10 centimeters, and 1 meter stick long.
- We also learned that sometimes objects to not measure to an exact numbers so then we need to say that the object is between to units of measurement. For example, the door is between 5 and 6 feet tall.
Science~
- As geologists, we read and discussed the different types of rocks starting with mountains and ending with clay. We also viewed a video about volcanoes and rocks within the different layers of the Earth as well as the varying rock and landforms throughout the earth.
Other Activities~
- Ethan Shevchenko was our Star Student of the Week! We enjoyed learning more about Ethan.
- Ethan Fitzgerald won the "Risk-Taker" Word of the Month Award! Way to go Ethan!!
- We attended our School Community Meeting! The grand total for Jump Rope for Heart reached over $24,000. Mrs. Wiesneski dyed her hair red AND Mr. Hecker shaved his beard and cut his hair SHORT!!
- Mr. Bissinger also fulfilled his offer to be Duct Taped to the APR room if we exceeded $20,000 during our Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser.
