Dear Woodrow Wilson Families:
We would like to take a moment to express our sincerest gratitude to everyone in our school community for all you are doing to support our students during this global pandemic. COVID-19 continues to have a profound impact on our nation, state and our local community in Framingham. During this challenging time, it has been heart-warming to see everyone’s resilience and commitment to student learning and well-being.
International Baccalaureate (IB)
Through the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, our school community is committed to providing a rigorous, inquiry-based, international education. We foster the development of knowledgeable, principled, and internationally-minded global citizens. Our students approach the world with an open mind and aspire to understand the different perspectives and ideas of others while helping to create a more peaceful world.
On December 7-9 we received the IB Visiting Team for our Evaluation Visit, which takes place every 5 years. In approximately 2-3 months we will receive a report with commendations and recommendations from our visit and will be sure to share results with you.
Attendance
Please continue to make education a priority and ensure that your children are actively participating in remote learning each and every day. Absences affect your children’s academic success. We hope to count on you as a partner in your children’s education.
Renaming of Woodrow Wilson
This week, students in Kindergarten through Grade 5 will be actively engaged in learning about the Renaming of Woodrow Wilson process. Please see more information on this topic within this SMORE newsletter.
We want to thank you for your continued support and wish you a Happy New Year!!
Sincerely,
Purnima DeMorais, Principal
Darlene Pugnali, Assistant Principal
Learning about why we are changing our school’s name
We have started the process to rename our school. While Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of the United States, was an important person in our country’s history, he is also known to have supported racist policies. As an International Baccalaureate (IB) school, we value being open-minded, caring, and principled. Our school’s name should reflect who we are as a community and our values of social justice.
Throughout the month of January, students will be learning about this name change in Library and Portuguese Class. This week as we introduce this important topic, our Library Media Specialist (Ms. Salinger) will be co-teaching with our Portuguese World Language teacher (Ms. Austin) and our IB PYP Coordinator (Ms. Flugrad). All students will be learning in English and Portuguese about the history of our school’s name and the reason why our school will be changing our name this year. We will also be reflecting on the criteria for our new name to represent our beliefs and values as an IB World School, to support social justice, and to be anti-racist.
Over the coming months, the entire community will be given the chance to participate in the process and we want to hear your suggestions for a new name. The Framingham School Committee will vote to approve the final name by the end of this school year, and it is important that the perspectives of our students, staff, families, and members of the Framingham community are all considered in determining the best name for our school.
We will be giving weekly updates in our school’s newsletter about the ways that our students and families can be part of this process to rename our school. Click here to read all of our updates about this renaming process. We hope that this week you will talk to your children about what they learned in their Library and Portuguese class about why we are changing our school’s name and why it is important to take action and speak up against racism. Thank you for your support and please reach out to the school if you have any questions.
