8th Grade Update
September 15, 2017
Dear 8th Grade Students and Families,
Hello and happy Friday to all! I'm excited to welcome our 8th grade parents to our weekly update! From now on, our weekly Friday updates will be emailed to all 8th grade students and the guardians listed on your family information form. Both students and parents should get into the habit of reading our 8th Grade Update every single Friday. In your updates you will find vital information about the high school application process, HSPT resources to study together at home, important announcements, big events, important dates to plan for, snapshots of our week together, and more. If you commit to reading your weekly Smore, you will be best prepared for a successful 8th grade year!
So, parents, welcome again to your first Smore!
Love,
Ms. K
PS - And how amazing do we look in our new hoodies?! (Thanks, Ms. Heil!)
Back to school night
As we go on this journey together, you will have questions. Never hesitate to reach out! And please feel free to email me in Spanish. I know my Spanish is terrible, but maybe you can help me improve. :) My email is kkullberg@gmail.com.
September To Do List
Registering for the HSPT
Setting Up for Success on the HSPT
This quarter, all 8th graders are participating in an HSPT Prep Lab with Ms. K and Ms. Slinkert. We will be doing both LA and math prep together in school, but that doesn't mean that the learning ends at home. We know that the difference between highly successful students and not-so-successful students on the HSPT comes down to taking advantage of the resources provided for you. Ms. Heil, Ms. K, and Ms. Slinkert have all helped to design some of the BEST HSPT prep you could ask for! Now it's just up to you to use the resources at home. All 8th graders are challenged to study every night for 10 minutes. Not sure what to study? Here's my advice:
You could REVIEW:
- Word Lists 1, 2, and 3 on Quizlet
- Synonym Questions by taking a look at what you've already done in your HSPT journal
You could KEEP PRACTICING:
- Word List 4 on Quizlet
- Antonym Questions by redoing any questions you got wrong on the practice worksheet today and taking a quiz on Schoology
Here are some quick links to our favorite HSPT prep resources:
Which high school is right for me?
This is the big question on everyone's mind. And it's not an easy one to answer! That's why it's so important that our 8th grade families start talking at home about what school is the best fit for you. Local Catholic high schools have come to visit us and share information about their application process. This week, we have already been visited by 8 Catholic high schools, and we have 2 more to look forward to on Monday. I am very proud of how respectful, responsible, and mature our 8th graders have been during these visits: every one of us has taken thorough notes! We're making great first impressions on our high schools and now it's time to bring the conversation home.
Pro Tips for High School Visits
- Make sure that you're looking sharp in your SH uniform
- Sit up straight and tall as you listen attentively
- Ask thoughtful questions (and not just about the cafeteria!) ;)
- Super Pro Tip: Take your notes home to read with your family! This will help you decide which schools you'll be applying to!
