Registration for 2020-2021 Now Open
From the Lyon School Principal's Desk
Thanks to everyone who attended our Parent/Teacher Conferences at Lyon. We appreciate this face-to-face opportunity to talk about how the school year has gone thus far for your child(ren) and toward a strong finish as we transition to our third and final trimester of the year. Recent professional development in our district has focused on the critical importance of connections and relationship building for all of our students, and these conversations with you help us build on our daily efforts to make every child at Lyon feel connected to school, supported in their learning, understood and appreciated for who they are as individuals. There is still much to look forward to in this current school year, and we are excited to continue this work with our students and with you.
And although our next school year is still several months away, our planning and preparations have already begun. Online registration for 2020-21 is open and in full gear, and we have already welcomed many incoming kindergarten families, as well as some new incoming first and second grade families. If you know of any friends or neighbors who need to connect with us for registration of first-time Lyon students, please send them our way. As current Lyon/Pleasant Ridge families, we certainly hope you aren’t procrastinating registration for your current students or if you have an incoming kindergartener J. Call us if you have any questions or if we can help in any way!
Later this spring, the Lyon staff and I will engage in our work to create the groups of children that will comprise our 2020-21 homeroom classes. The class placement process is one that takes considerable time and collaboration among our school team, and will not be truly finalized until August. In creating classes, we strive to take into account all that we have already learned regarding the social, emotional, academic and creative aspects of every child. Our goal is to form balanced, heterogeneous classes in which each child can succeed. If you have additional information that you feel is important for us to consider when placing your child in a class for next school year, please share it with me in writing (or email: kdorken@glenview34.org) no later than April 30th. Your thoughts about your child’s peer relationships and previous school experiences are certainly valued. Consistent with past practice at Lyon School, however, please know that we are unable to honor requests for specific teachers. If you have any questions about the class placement process, please give me a call.
We hope to see you at Lyon soon!

Pleasant Ridge Families,
Wow! There was lots of excitement at Pleasant Ridge last week. With the 4th Grade Musical and International Night taking place, Pleasant Ridge was certainly the place to be!
I’m so proud of our 4th grade students who put on an amazing show. Preparations began in December and they’ve been working at it ever since. I know that everyone who saw the show would agree that their hard work paid off. The 4th graders performed with confidence and personality. It’s always fun to see our students in a different light and share their many talents with us. I’d also like to acknowledge Ms. Partyka (Music) and Mrs. Dada (Drama) who facilitated the entire experience for our students. Well done 4th graders!
A huge thank you to all the parent volunteers who made International Night happen. Both Lyon and Pleasant Ridge families packed the house. It’s so important that we take the time to honor and celebrate our diversity. I’m proud to be part of a community that models the value in celebrating who we are for our children. Thank you to all the parent and high school volunteers that made the evening possible. A special shout out to Catharine Gray Ferraro who organized this wonderful event.
Below are some news and notes for the upcoming month. Thank you for your continued support. I hope your family has a great spring break together.

Erin's Law from the Lyon School Social Woker
Dear Parents and Guardians, Again this year, the Glenview School District curriculum will include Erin’s Law, a state mandated, age-appropriate sexual abuse / assault awareness and prevention education program for students Pre-K through 12th grade. Governor Pat Quinn signed Erin’s Law in January 2013. Erin's Law is named after abuse survivor Erin Merryn, who is working to have all 50 states pass legislation that mandates sexual abuse prevention education for public school children. The law's goal is similar to efforts surrounding anti-bullying, internet safety, and drug prevention. The website for Erin's Law states that without proper education, most children will be repeatedly abused for years because often the only message they receive comes from their abuser who threatens them into silence. The new law's mission is to "shatter the silence and stigma around sexual abuse and educate children and empower them with their voice." In keeping with this state mandate, Lyon School will be teaching sexual abuse awareness in a sensitive and developmentally age appropriate manner. The lessons will be taught by Jessica Caccavallo, MSW, LSW, the Prevention Coodinator for Northwest Center Against Sexual Assault & The CARE Center. This is Ms. Caccavallo’s second year providing Erin’s Law education to all District 34 schools. Presentations will begin next week and continue throughout the spring, based on presenter availability. We will educate students on safe touches and unsafe touches, safe secrets and unsafe secrets, and how to “get away and tell today.” We are happy to be able to offer this important and valuable learning opportunity to our students. If you do not wish to have your child participate, please send a note to the school office (to the attention of our Social Worker) or email the Social Worker (cshonk@glenview34.org) by the end of the school day Tuesday March 10th, and we will arrange for alternate activities during the presentation. The website for more information on Erin’s Law is: http://erinslaw.org/
