Irving Elementary
October Wrap-Up
Kindergarten News
October has been busy in kindergarten! Students have been engaged in lots of new learning and exploration activities.
With the weather finally cooling off, Kindergarten has been able to go outside and take breaks to visit our outdoor classroom. We have been able to check garden beds and get our hands dirty by harvesting peppers, tomatoes, basil, and flowers. We have also been brave to try tasting new things from our garden at snack time! Our class has also talked about the importance of composting. Composting is using leftover food scraps and paper to place in the garden beds. Combined with water and air, this process allows the garden to make important nutrients for the soil to help things grow. We love our outdoor classroom!
We had firemen and women from the Winfield Fire Department visit with the students about fire safety. Firefighters talked to our classes about what to do in an emergency, like a fire, at home. Students also got to see the gear that protects firefighters and they got to see the inside of a firetruck!
Both kindergarten classes have 5th grade buddies. We have had group discussions about how to be a buddy and not a bully. Our students and the 5th graders really enjoy the time together so we hope to continue planning activities with each other.
One of our favorite things in kindergarten is our Project Based Learning Unit about shapes. In math we have started talking about shapes, but that's just the beginning! We have been reading about shapes, looking for shapes in our classrooms and around the school, and exploring ways we can build and use shapes to create all sorts of things. Over the next several weeks students will start to design and create an exhibit using shapes. We will send out more information on that in the next several weeks.
