MR WILEY'S WEEKLY MESSAGE
If you are like me, nightly you will ask your kids, “Do you have any homework tonight?” More often you might be hearing, “No, I got it done at school.” This year at Otsego Junior High School we implemented an Academic Assist period. Each student ends the day with an Academic Assist (A.A.). A.A. is like a studyhall, but it differs in that, unlike a studyhall, you are not assigned to one room or teacher permanently. Let’s say your son or daughter is struggling with math, but her A.A. teacher is her social studies teacher. A.A. allows the flexibility for your child to go to her math teacher for extra help. This benefits the students by allowing extra time to work on assignments with the assistance of the teacher. It also benefits the parents, because now your child is not asking you to help them with subjects you have not had to deal with in 20 or 30 years. It is my belief that students need to be working with their teachers on their assignments rather than their parents. Does that mean your child will never bring work home? No, but more than likely, it will be getting done at school.
As a parent, your next question might be, “How can I be sure the work is getting done?” The best way is to check PowerSchool: https://otsego.ps.nwoca.org/public/home.html. Here you will be able to see the overall class grade, and if you click on that grade, the individual grades within that class. There’s even an app for that. I check the app daily and the app even shows if my child’s grade has gone up or down recently.
Another way to keep track of your child’s work is through Google Classroom and Remind 101. Many teachers are using these resources and have sent out notices to let parents know. If you are unsure, contact your child’s teachers by going here: http://otsegoknights.org/directory.

Athletic Attendance Policy (See item #4 in Athletic Responsibility Waiver)
To participate in a contest or attend practice, an athlete must be in school all day of the contest unless prior arrangements are made with the principal. In the case of a week night contest, an athlete or cheerleader must be in attendance the entire following day in order to participate in the next contest.
This eligibility policy will apply to any student athletes, managers, statisticians, cheerleaders, and other extracurricular activities at OJHS involving students in grades 7 and 8. The junior high school principal or district superintendent may declare a student immediately ineligible for involvement in a serious offense.
