Honoring a Legacy
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, January 21, 2019
"The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education."
-- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
A Day to Reflect on Justice, Service, and Hope
President Ronald Reagan, in 1983, signed a bill designating the third Monday of January as a Federal holiday to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This Monday, January 21, 2019, we commemorate the memory, the life, the message, and the hope instilled by Dr. King.
Communities across our Nation will take pause this weekend to reflect on the life and legacy of this Civil Rights icon and heed his message of justice, service, and hope.
The late Coretta Scott King, Dr. King’s widow, wrote a poignant piece on “The Meaning of the King Holiday.” Mrs. King proclaimed,
“The Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday celebrates the life and legacy of a man who brought hope and healing to America. We commemorate as well the timeless values he taught us through his example — the values of courage, truth, justice, compassion, dignity, humility and service that so radiantly defined Dr. King’s character and empowered his leadership. On this holiday, we commemorate the universal, unconditional love, forgiveness and nonviolence that empowered his revolutionary spirit.”
This Monday we honor the message and life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Best Regards,
Dr. Christopher Manno,
