Plants
The Piney Woods region has many trees that include: Shortleaf Pines, Longleaf Pines and Post Oaks. In the bayou regions of the Piney Woods, there are Bald Cypress trees lining the rivers and creeks. Most trees near rivers or streams have Spanish Moss hanging from their branches. Although the Piney Woods gets moderate rainfall, Prickly Pear Cactuses can be found throughout the area.
Animals
Small mammals that live in the Piney Woods include Eastern Cottontail Rabbits, Eastern Gray Squirrels, and Virginia Opossums. These are preyed on by North American Cougars, Gray Foxes, Bobcats, and many species of snakes and other carnivorous animals. Due to the vast amount of trees, a variety of birds live in the Piney Woods. These birds are able to eat worms and small mammals.
