TACFA also sponsors a reception to recognize the winners and their teachers.
Anti-DUI Assembly
On Tuesday, May 16th, the Irvine Police Department offered an anti-DUI workshop to all Seniors. The workshop exposed students to the fact that driving under the influence does not only mean drunk driving, but getting behind the wheel when under the influence of any kind of narcotic, including prescription medication. It is our hope that our students will learn a valuable lesson to make better choices -- not only on Prom night but in their daily lives.

American Chemical Society at Beckman
The American Chemical Society Olympiad Exam is a competition where each school will send their best students to compete and test their knowledge of chemistry. There are two levels of competition: the First Year Exam which is only applicable to students that are taking chemistry for the first time. The exam covers every aspect of chemistry and quite similar to a harder SAT II Subject Exam. The Advanced/Olympiad exam is open to all chemistry students and will actually contain an examination and a laboratory assessment. Throughout the years, we have had multiple Top-3 finishes out of 48-55 high schools in the region (depending on level), with our highest finish at Second Place. Lastly, we have had a Beckman student get recognized and ranked nationally with High Honors for the Advanced Exam (Jennifer McCleary) and have a student win highest scorer in the region for the First Year Exam (Edward Jin).

College Case Study Program
On May 30 a member of the BHS Counseling team will come to the US History or US History AP classroom and introduce the case study program and explain the process. Then the counselor will show the students where the documents are located and ask them to review them and complete the Candidate Review Form before June 2.
On June 2 the Admissions Counselors from the colleges will come in to the US History or US History AP classroom and do a mock admission committee meeting with the students to demonstrate to them how college decisions are made. The experienced admissions counselor(s) will lead the students through their findings from the 3 sample applications that the students have reviewed. He/she will also go over what colleges look for in an applicant and what every college values. Students will learn first-hand how they will be evaluated, which helps them begin thinking of the qualities and strengths they bring to the process, and what they will need to do to prepare for the application process. They will also learn about the importance of doing their college research and the importance of finding the right college that fits them.
Then at lunch there will be a College Fair (in the commons) where all BHS students will be able to meet with the College Admissions Representatives.
Min Ji Seo, and the Congressional Award of Achievement
The Congressional Award is bestowed upon youth from ages 14 to 23 for achievement in volunteer service, personal development, physical fitness, and exploration. There are no strict guidelines or methods to pass the requirements for this award, and each individual would follow their own path for the Congressional Award.
The Congressional Award comes in six different tiers. The lowest tier is the Bronze Congressional Award Certificate of Achievement, then the Silver Certificate, and then Gold. The requirements are cumulative, meaning that in order to receive the Gold Certificate, one must also make the standards for a Bronze and Silver Certificate. The medals are the top three tiers of achievement and thus require more work. They also come in the corresponding bronze, silver, and gold tiers.
