Empowering Our Spartans to Learn
Welcome to conference week, Spartan Families. With our half day schedule Wednesday-Friday this week, followed by Spring Break April 1-5, sometimes it is easy to let up on the gas pedal and coast on by.
However, with only 56 school days left and eight for third quarter, we hope everyone takes the time to show off all of their learning by completing work and making deadlines. Please reach out to our staff if you have any questions on how to best support your Spartan as they work toward finishing this quarter and school year STRONG!
Conferences at Stanwood Middle School are Wednesday evening and Thursday afternoon. Please contact the office to schedule an individual or group conference, 360.629.1350, or use the teacher emails below to schedule a conference.
Our office will close at 11:00 a.m. on Friday because we will be open late Wednesday night for conferences.

Staff Spotlight
Spartan Staff Spotlight
This week we are shining the spotlight on John Getzinger, one of our social studies teachers. Mr. Getzinger has taught at Stanwood Middle School for 18 years. Having taught every grade level from 3rd to 8th grade, he taught four years at Church Creek/Utsalady Elementary, and for three years he taught at International Schools Rumbai in Sumatra, Indonesia.
As a veteran of Stanwood MS, he says what makes our school special is because Staff has worked hard to create a culture where students can succeed while having opportunities to try new things and expand their horizons through new opportunities in their classes, sports, and clubs.
When he's not teaching 6th and 7th graders history, he likes to fly to new places and eat all of the good food. He also enjoys fishing and spending time with his family at Disneyland.
A few quick reminders from around the district ...
Time is running out to take our community survey!
We're still hoping more community members take our annual Community Survey.
Your voice truly helps us plan for and prioritize for the years ahead as we adjust our practices in several ways to meet the needs of our students, staff, families, and community!
Bus guidelines
To keep everyone safe on school buses and to abide by state law, please follow these guidelines while on a bus:
All items — such as sports equipment, instruments, and metal water bottles — must be completely secured inside of a closed bag or instrument case.
The bus is considered an extension of the school day, and students are expected to behave in a way that is consistent with school/classroom expectations.
For example, items such as bats, lacrosse sticks, tennis rackets, and Stanley water bottles must be secured inside a closed bag while on a school bus.
There are no exceptions to these rules and regulations, per WAC 392-145-021 (Washington State Administrative Code) and School Board policy.
We appreciate your help in making sure that our students continue to stay safe on the bus and following state law so our school buses remain in service.
Please contact our Transportation Department with any questions.
Local nonprofits offer clubs and programs for students
Several area nonprofit organizations — such as the Stanwood-Camano YMCA and the Stanwood Camano Arts Advocacy Commission — offer clubs, programs, classes, and events for local students, including:
- Spring Sports (YMCA)
- Leaders Club (YMCA)
- Freeform Line Drawing (SCAAC)
- Spring Rowing (Everett Rowing)

Student Drop Off/Pick Up
Student drop off/pick up will be in our east parking lot. This is the opposite parking lot from where our busses drop off. Students will still enter through the front of the building when dropped off in the morning.
Morning Routine
Once students arrive at school they can eat breakfast in the cafeteria each day. All students will wait in the foyer, or cafeteria if eating breakfast, until our bell rings at 7:25 a.m. When the bell rings at 7:25 a.m. students will go straight to class. On regular schedule days students go straight to 1st period, on Wednesday students will go straight to our Spartan Space (Advisory).
Routines and Expectations at Stanwood Middle School
You will see below we have included expectations we have developed for classrooms, the cafeteria, hallways, bathrooms, the library, our outside areas, and the bus lane before and after school. we will review all of these with students throughout the first week.
In addition to what is listed below, we don't allow hats, hoods, gum chewing or cell phone usage from 7:25 a.m. to 2:10 p.m. We will talk with students about these expectations during the first week as well.
During the first day of school Holly Christmas, our Assistant Principal, Jayde Piggott, our Counselor, and myself will be visiting every classroom twice. We will first walk around in the morning to introduce ourselves to every student and make sure we answer questions about lunches, schedules and anything else that will make students comfortable on their first day. We will again visit every classroom after lunches to talk about bus and pickup procedures for students after school.
