Cougar Connection
2020-2021
A letter from Mrs. Tryon
Dear Cougar families,
We are so excited to finally be able to see our Cougars whether they will be joining us virtually or in person. We have been very busy preparing for the return of our students. We want to update you on procedures we will be following to ensure the safety of our staff and students.
For the 2020 - 2021 school year, we are expecting 1,051 students. Currently, 605 students will attend in person and 422 students will attend virtually through CFISD Connect. As a result of these numbers, we will have about half of our students in each grade level at lunch, recess and in Art, Music and PE at one time. Our new school hours are 8:40 - 4:10.
Attendance will be taken daily for both in person and CFISD Connect students. Grading guidelines will be the same as they were before COVID-19.
Classroom Arrangements
Our classrooms will have a combination of face-to-face and virtual students. In the classroom, social distancing will be implemented to the extent feasible. Classrooms have been provided with student desk shields that offer an additional layer of protection. We will do all we can so that students will not have to change teachers as they change learning platforms (from CFISD Connect to face-to-face and vice versa), but we can not guarantee that it will not happen. There are multiple factors in determining teachers including certifications and class ratios.
First Day of School
We want all of our students to have an excellent first day of school. To our Connect families, please be flexible with the scheduled live teaching, especially the first day of school. It is important that we greet students, get them safely to their correct rooms, and teach our face to face students the new social distancing practices. In a typical school year, we are not exactly on schedule our first day of school. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Arrival
We will stagger the unloading of buses this school year. Face-to-face students will have the option of grab-and-go breakfast from two locations to aid in social distancing. New this year, a breakfast kiosk will be located in the hallway near 5th grade. Staff will be on hand to guide our car riders and students arriving from daycare to class. Students will enter the building at 8:25.
Dismissal
Please be patient as we adhere to safety guidelines during dismissal. Due to social distancing, car riders will be spaced out in the cafeteria and if needed in the music room, making their walk to the cars a little longer. Teachers will escort students to buses on a staggered schedule, and students attending day care after school will wait in the large group hallway as we have done in the past.
Masks
The district updated the Face Mask Guidelines available in the Lead Safely section of the CFISD website. Guidelines state, “All staff and students (grades PK-12) will wear face masks on buses, in hallways and common areas, and when social distancing is not feasible, including in classrooms.” Face shields can be worn but only with a mask.
School Supplies
Whether online or face-to-face, students need school supplies for a successful year. School supplies ordered through Keith were shipped directly to campus. For our face-to-face learners, staff will deliver supplies to your child in their classroom. Teachers will assist in prioritizing the supplies needed for each class. No supplies will be shared this school year. Each child will use only his or her own supplies. If you have not yet purchased school supplies for your child, the lists of supplies are available on our Keith website. Parents of CFISD Connect students, please note that when your child returns to school face-to-face, your child will need to return with all of their supplies.
PE, Art, Music (PEAM)
Face-to-face students will go to PEAM daily with students in their class and in their partner teacher’s class. Large group teachers will sanitize all materials between classes. PE will occur outside whenever possible so students can space out even more. CFISD Connect learners will be provided with pre-recorded independent activities to complete for PE, Art, and Music.
Lunch
Students will eat lunch in the cafeteria with their grade level and will sit in every other seat and not directly across from one another. There will be x’s and checkmarks to assist students to identify available seats. For the safety of all, there will be no lunch visitors and no lunch drop offs until further notice.
Recess
At this time, we are advised to have only one grade level on the playground equipment each day. Students will have access to recess equipment, all of which will be sanitized after use. Students are not required to wear a mask when playing at recess. When needed, staff will ask students to space out across the playground.
Library
Face to face students will have access to library books. Students will be social distanced and encouraged to use hand sanitizer when entering the library. Returned books will be set aside for four days before being reshelved. Any technology and all surfaces will be sanitized between uses.
Coming to Campus
Due to Covid-19, we are limiting visitors and volunteers. This is not typical at Keith and will require an adjustment for all of us. When coming to campus, you will be asked about your visit through the doorbell. Appointments will be required this year. If you need to pick up your child early, please provide a written note that morning. You will be required to wear a mask, answer the health screening questions on the door and your driver’s license must be scanned to document your visit in the event of contact tracing.
Meet the Teacher
Next week our homeroom teachers will email families to introduce themselves in a video format. Our virtual Meet the Teacher videos will be emailed out on August 31, between 3-4 PM. Teachers will ask for parents to complete a transportation form as well as a few other documents prior to the first day of school. Teachers will then follow up with a class zoom meeting on Wednesday, September 2nd. This homeroom zoom will include all students in the class and will provide an opportunity for students to see their virtual and face to face peers while meeting their teacher. We can’t wait to see our Cougars!
Here is the schedule by grade level:

We are so excited to have our students back with us! We will work together to ensure safety and success for all of our Cougars. Our biggest request would be for all to please provide grace as we work to navigate the kinks of teaching students both face-to-face and online simultaneously. While we are truly blessed to have exceptional staff members on our campus, this is something new that none of us have done before. All of our teachers are working so hard to learn, plan, and brainstorm ways to connect with our students to help them to be engaged and excited about learning this year. We know there will be hiccups and kinks to work out. Please be patient as we work through these little problems, and remember that all Keith teachers want your children to get the best possible education whether in the building or tuning in from home. We are looking forward to seeing our Cougars on September 8, 2020.
With a happy heart,
Dawn Tryon
Keith Principal

Credit By Exam Information
Students in grades K-5 will have four opportunities during the school year to use “credit-by-exam” to accelerate to another grade level. Students will only have one opportunity to test for each grade level considered.
To apply to take the test to skip kindergarten, a student must be 5 by September 1, and registered in a CFISD school. To apply to take the test to skip grade 1, a student must be 6 by September 1, and enrolled in a CFISD school.
Students who earn scores of 80% or better on each component of the credit-by-exam will qualify to advance one grade. Only one grade level may be “skipped” each year. No retests will be given.
If you are interested in getting more information about credit-by-exam, please contact Nicole.Carroll@cfisd.net
