Current events - City X
By Allison Shamus, 5th grader
Hello Bobcats! Summer is almost here, and I am very excited about that. Today, for current events I am going to tell you about a cool project that Mr. Hartnett's class has been working on.
Mr. Hartnett's 4th grade class has been working on a project called City X. We were curious to learn more about this project, so I have asked Mr. Hartnett some questions about city X. The interview is below.
1.What is the basic idea of city x?
City X is a pretend city on another planet that is similar to earth. Humans have just moved there but are experiencing some problems as they try to colonize the planet. The City X residents sent their problems to our Bobcats hoping our Bobcats could design solutions for them! The solutions our Bobcats designed were created out of modeling clay then turned into a 3D image using a website such as Tinkercad. That way, the solutions could be emailed back to City X and then be 3D printed there on another planet!
2. What were some creative things your students did for city x?
There were some AMAZING ideas that students had! One of the problems on the planet was that the nights are very long and they are not getting enough sunlight to grow food. Harper A. designed a device that roams the planet collecting sunlight and turning it into a liquid! That way the sunlight can be brought back to the fields to feed plants at night! The device also had a GPS detector on it so it knows where the sunlight is. Lastly, you guessed it, the device was solar powered!
3. Is this a new project that your class has been doing or have you done City X in the past years?
This is my first time doing the project at Amerman, but I have done it with my other classes in the past.

And that is our current event for this week Bobcats! Have a great week!
STUDENTS MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Ria Sanin, 4th Grader
My name is Ria Saini and I am currently a 4th grade student in Mr. Hartnett's class at Amerman Elementary. I was truly sad with all the people dying and being affected with covid-19. I noticed my mom and brother working actively to help the community get through this crisis.
I was very inspired by my mom and brother's efforts and asked my brother if I could join his Northville-Novi Mask Initiative (NNMI) team to help more people.
This team is part of a bigger group that includes students from University of Michigan and Michigan State University. I am one of the youngest members of the NNMI team. Our website is www.nnmasks.com. I was able to help my brother and his team raise funds so that we can buy and donate kn95 masks to underprivileged nursing homes, senior care, shelters, police stations, some in the heart of detroit.
So far the NNMI team has raised over $7,000 in 2 weeks, and collectively the entire student body has raised over $18,000 for the student mask initiative. I am reaching out to all my teachers and family members to help support this initiative as we help those who help others in this time of need.
Thank you for giving me a chance to share my story.
Here’s a video of the work this team has been doing.

Learn Something New - Origami
By: Quinn Guthrie, 4th Grader
Learning doesn’t just have to be about school work, the most fun we have learning is when we learn about something we are interested in. This could be reading or math, science or history, even writing. It can also be learning a new recipe, how to cook or create a code or robot. Always keep learning and your mind will always keep growing.
This week learn something new: How to make an Origami Star
We’d love to see what you have been learning. Share with us via the Amerman Elementary PTA Facebook Page or on Twitter @amermannv or email Ms. LaManna at lamannael@northvilleschools.org
