Writing Arguments Weekly
This Week: Claggett teaches how to write with evidence
What is argument writing????
Argument writing is a great way to explain your opinions and perspectives about a certain topic to a particular audience. When you are writing an argument you first need a claim. A claim is your "opinion or perspective" and will be the topic of your argument. You state your claim first and then in your writing you explain why your claim is valid using specific evidence from content you learned from your teacher and/or your real life experiences. The more credible evidence you have to support your claim will create a better argument!
Claim: My Harley-Davidson is the best motorcycle ever!
I have done the first step in argument writing: I have stated my claim. I believe my HD motorcycle to be the best motorcycle in history. Now I need to support this claim with specific evidence.
Evidence
- Paint Job: I have a custom metallic red, gold, and black pain job that blows the competition away. Every time I stop to fuel up at least one person walks by and says, "Wow! That is a beautiful bike!"
- Chrome everywhere: everywhere you look on the bike is chrome after-market parts. Lighting fixtures, exhaust, levers, swingarm, etc.
- Speed and Power: Due to the stage 1 kit and Vance and Hines exhaust this puppy can go 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds and has the power to climb mountains in record timing.
Last Step: Explain why your argument wins!!
There are many motorcycles on the road today, but my HD is the only one worth riding. The HD Electra Glide and HD Road King may be bigger and have fancier gadgets such as audio systems and fairings, but they do not beat riding my 2001 Springer Softail. The riding position, custom seat, 18" ape hangers, and 1450 cc engine allow you to cruise down the highway in style and comfort. Take a ride on it and you will agree that it really isn't a contest. All other bikes are fighting for 2nd place
