In 2013, 2,163 teenagers died in motor vehicle crash, and 243,243 were treated in emergency departments for injuries they had in a crash.
That means that about six teenagers from the age of 16-19 die in a motor vehicle crash everyday.
How to avoid these risks
Distractions: Always keep your eyes on the road. Texting or calling can always wait and should be only used in an emergency, if this happens you should pull over. You should also not carry passengers until you feel comfortable behind the wheel and have enough experience.
Speeding: Drive the speed limit because going over that may be hazardous, especially for a new driver. Speed limit is based on ideal conditions so you don't always need to go that fast, it's ok to go slower in heavy traffic or bad weather conditions.
Seat Belt: Always wear a seatbelt, as a driver or a passenger. Crashes happen anytime any place.
Consequences
Consequences for not insuring a teenage driver
- If a teen obtained a license and you failed to inform your insurer, they can deny your coverage because of misrepresentation
- Some insurance companies honor the unlisted driver, but may charge you for back premiums to make sure that you pay all the times the unlisted driver had their license
- If the teen is in a crash and is not insured:
Better to Insure Right Away
- So it's better to have your teen insured right away because according to the numbers teens are most likely to be in an accident
- Let your insurer know that you have a teen with a drivers license so they won't deny you when an incident does occur
