The Real Gift of Gratitude
This week begins a season of gratitude. April 22-26 is Administrative Assistant's Appreciation week. At LEHS we will be celebrating all of our office personnel who make a difference on a daily basis in so many ways.
- Our receptionists, Kathye Gonzales and Michelle Smith, greet students, parents, and visitors with a smile.
- Our registrars, Ann Edgecomb and Jennifer Phillips, assist families with registration, withdrawals, and records.
- Dana Higginbotham, Associate Principal Secretary, keeps our video boards and marquee up to date, schedules events on our master calendar, and is a big reason graduation runs so smoothly every year.
- Kathy Thompson, Principal's Secretary, also the other half of the graduation dynamic duo, takes care of all money matters - deposits, check requests, and ordering.
- Our four house office secretaries, Stefani Haverkamp (White House A - E), Traci Carter (Grey House Principal F - Li), Jennifer Lambright (Blue House Lo - Ri), and Vacant Temporarily (Gold House Ro - Z) are our main contacts for parents and students in all things student related. They reconcile attendance, schedule appointments for the house principals and counselors, and assist students and families with all matters school related.
- Mrs. Marisa Flores is our Translator. She works in the Student Services office where students receive support through our Intervention Counselor and CIS Social Worker. Mrs. Flores supports families who need translation services.
- Mrs. Alma Rutledge is our Athletic Office Secretary. She works for Sandra Howell, LEISD Athletic Director, and supports our athletic coaches and programs across the district.
Please let these ladies know how they have made a positive impact on your experiences at LEHS. A simple note of thanks goes such a long way and let's them know how important their role is at LEHS. An easy way to show one or more of these ladies that they are appreciated is to send them a Lobo Shout Out! One of the LEISD core values is "Creating a community where every student loves to learn, every teacher loves to teach and every person is proud to call home." Our office personnel are often the first contact that a student, parent, or visitor interacts with at LEHS. Their work in providing the highest level of customer service is a direct reflection of our school and district. They are an important part of creating an environment where we strive to uphold this district value. In the words of Robert Holden, "The real gift of gratitude is that the more grateful you are, the more present you become.”

Congratulations to the LEHS April Students of the Month
Junior - Tamia Thompson
Tamia is a member of the LEHS Academic Decathlon Team and is the LEHS Girls State Delegate. She plans on studying Political Science at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. Tamia's goal is to attend Law School and pursue a career as a lawyer. Ms. White, Tamia's Journalism Teacher said, "Tamia is probably one of the hardest working students I've ever had as a teacher during my time at Little Elm. I originally had Tamia in Journalism class last year, and this year I have her in Yearbook. This class takes up a lot of time, but she still finds time to be dedicated to other projects including Girl Scouts, but she is always able to put her all into whatever she is focused on. I wish I had more students like Tamia." Mrs. Smith, On-line Language teacher, stated "Tamia has a huge heart and works really hard. I wish her the best!" Mr. Hiller, LEHS Academic Decathlon Coach, said "Sometimes I think Tamia is here at the high school longer than me. If she isn't here, then you can usually find her making our community a better place." Mrs. Eby, AP Biology teacher, added "This is my second year having Tamia in class. Tamia is smart, kind, and passionate. When Tamia participates in something, so goes all in. In addition to being a great student, Tamia spends a lot of her free time helping out her community. Tamia is an outstanding person all around!"
Senior - Kaleb Dailey
Kaleb has been a member of the Lobo Baseball team for 4 years and a percussionist in the Lobo band for 3 years. Kaleb has already enlisted in the US Army and will report to Fort Benning in Georgia shortly after graduation to begin his career in the Army. Kaleb's goal is to become an Army Ranger. Coach Swinney, US Government teacher, said "Kaleb is a hard working student with a great disposition. As a student athlete he has a lot on his plate, but finds a way to produce quality work. Proud of him!" Ms. Bausher, Forensic Science teacher, stated "Kaleb is a very sweet soul. He is always positive and has a way of putting a smile on everyone's face. Kaleb's future is bright and I am honored to have him as a student." Mr. Olenski, PALS sponsor, shared "Kaleb has been a staple in the LEHS PALs program for the past two years. Kaleb has one of the kindest hearts that I know at LEHS. He is a great representative for our High School and district." Mr. Hamlin, English IV teacher, said "Kaleb Dailey is the student that always has an interesting take during class discussions. Always willing to provide commentary, Kaleb makes English IV fun and interesting. I would love to have a class full of students like Kaleb Dailey!!"
Senior - Courtnee Locke
Courtnee has played on the Lady Lobo Basketball team for four years. She is a member of the Student Athletic Leadership Council. Courtnee will attend Dallas Christian College in the fall on a Basketball Scholarship. Her goal is to be a police office after finishing her college degree. Coach Oliphant, LEHS Girls Basketball Coach, shared "Courtnee has been a member of the lady lobo basketball program for four years and consistently led through leadership on the court as well as in the classroom. She was a member of the Student Athlete Leadership Council and held an outside job during her career. Courtnee is a committed student, both to her academics and extracurricular. We are proud to announce that she is a Texas High School Coaches Association Academic All-State, District 8-5A Academic All District, District 8-5A 2nd Team All District and 2019 Team MVP. She plans to continue her education and basketball career at Dallas Christian College. We will miss her dearly but wish her the very best." Coach Swinney, US Government teacher, said "Courtnee is a very responsible young person. She is a leader in the classroom and on the court. She is amicable and always willing to help her classmates." Mr. Perry, English IV teacher, stated "Courtnee is forever friendly and polite. She is a dedicated worker and a very smart person. Unless her plans have changed, she wants to study Criminal Justice and be a police officer. She will be one of the best out there!" Coach Morton, Professional Communications teacher, submitted "Courtnee is a pleasure to have in class. While many seniors would take it easy in an elective, I can always count on her to give her best effort which says a lot about the type of young lady she is!"
Senior - Tighe Harrison
Tighe is president of HOSA and a four year member of the Lobo Cheer team. She has helped start the middle school chapter of HOSA this year. Tighe will attend Mary Hardin Baylor in the fall and will pursue a career in nursing. Mrs. Julie Brown, OnRamps Pre-Calculus teacher, said "Tighe has such a positive attitude and transmits it to the rest of the class. There is such a difference in the class environment when she is not present. She is such a responsible and determined young lady who always gets her work done and takes care of business. I am definitely going to miss her next year!" and Mrs. Chelsea Nicoli, Anatomy & Physiology teacher, shared "She has grown so much this year in her leadership skills and this month has gone above and beyond to make sure the kids are ready and supported for state."
Congratulations to these students for the great works they have done while at LEHS and the difference they will make in the service careers they have chosen!

CTE Collaboration Project
Education & Training students were partnered with Business or Culinary students to create a book to educate children on a business or culinary topic. Education & Training students were primarily responsible for the design and content being age appropriate, and Business or Culinary students were primarily responsible for the accuracy of the book content.
The book proposals have already been impressive, so we're excited to see the finished products!

In preparation for these important graduation requirements, we are planning some specialized tutoring during the school day. In January we administered a STAAR benchmark assessment from TEA and experimented with a block schedule. As you know we have one period (5th) that is already on a block schedule (meets every other day). While this schedule is not practical for the entire year, it was a successful schedule for providing extra time for special projects. We will use this special schedule on the following dates:
April (A-24, B-25, A-30, B- May 1)
A days odd periods; B days even periods - See bell schedule below.
This schedule allows for extended time (1 hour 45 minutes each period) on a single day. While this extended time will allow EOC teachers the opportunity for strategic EOC preparation, other teachers will have the opportunity on these dates to plan other extended time projects needed in their content area.

Are you an Alum of LEHS?
It is our pleasure to announce that our LEISD Communications department is embarking on the first steps of creating an official Alumni Association for LEHS. We understand that there may be some existing alumni Facebook page(s) and we are trying to make it easier to communicate with alumni. Our LEISD Eduction Foundation has also been working on this project and we're hoping to use the power of our social media to strengthen their efforts.
1. Please use the form, linked here, to submit your alumni information. Share, share, share this form as you see fit to all current alumni groups or individuals.
2. LEISD Communications has created an email address where alumni can get information and communicate with the District - alumni@littleelmisd.net
3. An alumni webpage is a work in progress -www.littleelmisd.net/alumni to share even more information.
We are hoping to capture as many class of 2019 students as we can before they head off to their next adventures. This will be a great place to start - but that's not all. We want as many alumni as we can find, from as far back as we can go. If we could manage to get a few well known alumni to Tweet or share with their alumni friends the efforts can multiply quickly.
Please share, share, share with your contacts, social media outlets, or however you need. Help us engage our alumni to connect our Lobo Nation. One Community, One Pack Alumni united can benefit our current students and keep the Lobo Spirit alive for generations.
Teenagers who are anxious or depressed often turn to pot or alcohol to make themselves feel better. It's easy to get, their friends are doing it, and there’s no stigma attached. It may actually help with their symptoms in the short term. But substance use can also delay and undermine their ability to get effective, lasting help and put them on a collision course with addiction.
This week on childmind.org we feature a comprehensive guide to substance use and mental health disorders, developed in collaboration with the Partnership for Drug Free Kids. In it we examine how substance use interacts specifically with disorders in adolescents and young adults — how does it affect symptoms, behavior, treatment, and long-term prognosis? The guide is for both parents and teenagers themselves, it’s downloadable, and we hope it will enable families to make decisions that will be effective for them, now and in the future.

Report Harmful, Harassing, and Bullying Behavior
LEISD has an on-line tool called "Anonymous Alerts" that students, parents, and teachers can use to report harmful, harassing, and bullying type behaviors. Anonymous Alerts bullying reporting mobile app helps combat bullying and other negative activity in schools by empowering students to speak up. Social and peer pressures are some of the hardest obstacles for students to overcome. Anonymous Alerts encourages students, parents and staff to quickly, easily, and anonymously report bullying, cyber-bullying, gang-related issues, and other sensitive topics through private messages to school officials by building. All reports remain completely anonymous even during a two-way email conversation, although submitters have the option to reveal their identity if they prefer to have a person-to-person discussion.
To send a report from the Web/Internet go to: www.anonymousalerts.com/littleelmisd/
To send a report from your phone:
- Download the Anonymous Alerts® app for free from the Apple Store, Google Play store, and the Chrome store
