Principal Turner's Corner
I hope that everyone is enjoying their weekend. I'm excited to share that we will be taking several CPEC team members to New York City this week to attend the College Board - Dream Deferred Conference. This will be my second time attending the conference as a high school principal. When I attended before, I left inspired to create a high school culture and climate that is filled with opportunities to prepare all students for post-secondary success. I have even higher expectations this year because of the resources and supports that are embedded into our program at CPEC.
The Dream Deferred Conference will also help our team to reflect on our current practices and to examine ways that we can improve instruction, access to post secondary career planning and optimization of relationships that are rooted in high expectations for every student. I'm looking forward to returning after the conference and sharing what we've learned with our CPEC team, our School Improvement Team and our PTSO.
Together in service,
Principal Turner

Any student interested in a health science or medical career: Plan to come hear from Karen Summers, the Dean of the Health Sciences Department here at Central Piedmont. She is a wealth of information about all medical careers and how you can follow your dream intentionally with a degree or pathway here at CP! She will be presenting on FRIDAY, APRIL 5 from 8:30-9:30. Interested students should sign up here: https://forms.gle/WLbywGyuezSVELtn7. Location will be determined based on student interest.
Reminder: If you plan to take summer coursework through CPCC, there is a financial commitment! Please review the information and complete the required form https://sites.google.com/cms.k12.nc.us/cpec-school-counseling/cp-information/summer?authuser=0. Students who do not complete the form by May 16 will be dropped from any summer class they sign up for.
Registration for summer classes starts APRIL 6.
Central Piedmont Advising for Fall 2024: All of our CPEC students got a chance to meet with Central Piedmont advisors this past week to plan their fall 2024 courses. They selected the classes they plan to take and added them to their My College, but have not yet selected the sections (times) of the classes they will take. There are important next steps before finalizing registration!
- Students will have access to their 24-25 high school schedule by April 8, so that they can see when they have space in their schedules for college classes.
- They can then go in to their My College to select of the planned classes that fit around their high school coursework and other commitments.
- On April 26, registration will open at 7:30 AM. By that time, student should have their sections selected so all they need to do is log in to MyCollege and click REGISTER. We get priority registration before any other CPCC student, so taking advantage of this registration time will ensure they get the classes and sections they want.
NOTE: A CP Advisor will be here April 15, all day, for students to drop in and ask clarifying questions or have their schedule double checked by an advisor.
CPEC & CPCC Closed Friday, March 29th - Tuesday, April 2nd
CPEC and CPCC will be closed for the Easter Holiday Friday, March 29th - Monday, April 1st. Tuesday, April 2nd is a teacher workday for CPEC. Bus transportation will not run on Tuesday, April 1st for students that have CPCC classes.

CPEC Faculty Participates in Depth of Knowledge (DOK) Training
This past Wednesday our CPEC faculty and staff participated in the Depth of Knowledge (DOK) training with CMS Talent Development Specialist, Heather Ayers. Depth of knowledge is a language system that can differentiate between levels of complexity regarding how students engage with their educational materials. Integrating DOK language and levels of complexity in our CPEC classrooms will increase the rigor of teaching and learning and will better prepare our students to successfully transition to their college level classes at CPCC and beyond.
CPEC Advanced Placement (AP) Teachers Attend College Board - A Dream Deferred Conference in New York City (March 25-27)
We are are proud to share that CPEC will send several educators to New York City this week to attend the College Board - A Dream Deferred Conference. College Board A Dream Deferred conference welcomes education professionals working to make a difference for African American students.
The conference is focused on the state of college readiness for African American students and provides a forum for sharing best practices, key data, and research to drive measurable actions to ensure access to opportunity.
The mission of A Dream Deferred is to provide a platform for educators to present strategies that address the unique educational and cultural needs of this important group of students.
Academic Support for 9th Grade Students
We will continue additional academic support to assist our 9th grade students with their academic performance. 9th grade students that currently have below a 2.5 unweighted GPA will be required to attend academic remediation during their advisory period using the i Ready blended learning platform. Students will receive this support for the remainder of the 4th quarter.
Attendance Policy Regarding Final Exams (Student Reminder)
As we move further into the 2nd semester I want to remind our students of the attendance policy regarding teacher-made final exams. Students who meet the criteria below may be exempt from taking a final exam in a course that does not require participation in a state-required (i.e CTE) or End of Course Assessment:
Students with a grade of an ‘A’ (90%) or above and no more than 3 absences.
Students with a grade of a ‘B’ (80%) or above with no more than 1 absence. Students would have the option to take the final exam to improve their grade rather than the exemption. If a student chooses to take the exam, CMS grading practices are followed, and the exam counts for 20% of the student’s final grade.
For students that have an undue hardship with attendance due to not having transportation established as a new or MCV student or has a documented medical/health condition through an IEP or 504, the principal may exempt the student from participating in a non-EOC/state-required final exam if the student has met the academic criteria.
Students who participate and complete Advanced Placement exams may choose to take the teacher-made final to include in their final grade for the class.
