Multilingual Department Newsletter
Winter/Spring 2024
Hello fellow Wildcat Educators and welcome to the month of March! Included is a quick survey and a few resources, and extra information that we hope you will find valuable as you navigate your day to day with our wonderful ML students!
Spring is almost here...and it's that testing time of the year!!
From one test to another....
Our ML students have recently completed their ACCESS testing and now they look forward to MCAS, along with the rest of their peers! We can really support all MLs by placing an extra focus on The Language of Math as we approach the test. We have many ML students WHO CAN EXCEL AT MATH...but the language of the problem gets in the way. This seems like a good time of year to share the short video of Moises in the Math Classroom.
It's a worthwhile watch regardless of your content, because it just speaks loudly to the importance of providing language support for ML students. Unfortunately, we cannot offer MCAS in a native language, but we can proactively find ways to offer tools and encourage confidence in these students as they prepare to attack the test.
So many words to teach....So little time to teach them
All students will benefit from the explicit teaching of certain Tier 2 words. Multilingual Learners NEED the extra support as they navigate the complexity of academic content on their journey toward becoming proficient in the English Language.
The below video is a pretty decent explanation of the "Hows" and "Whys" of teaching Math Language. It's worth a full viewing or at least a skim through.
This video is less than 2 minutes.
