A Message From The Health Office:
Please take the time to review the following illness guidelines. First and foremost, if your child is not feeling well in the morning, please do not send them to school. An ill child is unable to learn and negatively impacts the health of other children and staff in the classroom.
Fever: Students should remain home with a fever of 100.4F or higher. All students are required to be fever-free for 24 hours , without the use of fever-reducing medications such as Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen, before returning to school.
Cold symptoms- Fever is not the only indication of illness! Coughing, sneezing, a runny nose, and fatigue are also signs of illness and all warrant a day off to prevent further spread of germs.
COVID- If your child tests positive for COVID-19, please contact your school nurse and use our district’s reporting form at: covid reporting data sheet for return to school dates. All COVID positive students (regardless of vaccination status) must complete a full 5 day isolation period (with day 0) being the date of the positive test (if no symptoms), OR the date of first symptoms, in order to return to school.
Antibiotics- If your child is prescribed an antibiotic, a full 24 hours of medication is required prior to returning to school.
Vomiting or diarrhea- Students must be free from vomiting and diarrhea for a full 24 hours prior to returning to school.
Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)- Students may return to school after receiving eye drops for a full 24 hours AND the eye is free of discharge.
Good handwashing is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of germs both at school and at home.
Advisory
As Thanksgiving approaches, our sixth graders focused on the concept of gratitude. Students watched a video to have a better understanding of the meaning of gratitude and how it impacts each and every one of us. Students then created their own letter of gratitude to a loved one using canva. We are hoping they have the opportunity to share it with their loved one over the Thanksgiving holiday. To bring the concept to our LCJSMS community students participated in a Gratitude Gravity activity where they express their gratitude towards something or someone at school. Seventh grade is a big adjustment, both academically and developmentally. In advisory students focused on changes that are common in adolescence, the ability to recognize when they happen and how to cope with them. Students also discussed how changes can be positive or negative. In small groups students discussed ways in which they have been impacted by change since the beginning of their middle school experience. After reviewing a few scenarios students went over ways in which they can cope and help themselves through these ‘changes’. In eighth grade our students had a lesson on Integrity. Students discussed the definition of integrity and cheating and how they can impact one's character for the better or worse. Through scenarios students explored and gained understanding on whether different scenarios were cheating and/or the right thing to do. In honor of Thanksgiving students ended their lesson with a few fun activities to celebrate.

Women in the Workplace Interview Project
Ask a student to interview you about your work experience! The Women in the Workplace Interview project is a video compilation composed of students interviewing significant women in their lives. The project showcases women across various occupations and highlights their contributions. A video compilation of the interviews will be shown in an advisory lesson next year. While any student can submit an interview, eighth graders can earn up to three hours of community service. Students can learn more about the project and submit an interview using the Google Classroom code, jo3ifrx.
Deadline January 19, 2024
*more community service opportunities can be found in the daily announcements.
Student Identification Badges (Student IDs)
Our school district is placing a strong focus on school safety and security. As such, we are intensifying our focus on students wearing their student IDs at all times throughout the school day. Students who are not wearing their IDs could incur disciplinary consequences, after a certain number of infractions (3 or more per month). We would appreciate the support of our parent community in emphasizing that message at home.
Student Lateness to School
Our school district holds student attendance and timeliness to school as an utmost priority to ensure student academic success. Students with four (or more) tardies per month (regardless of reason) will be assigned a Central Detention. Students will be given additional detentions for subsequent tardy points (8, 12, 16). These totals will be run once per month at the end of the month. Central Detentions are held from 2:55-3:35 PM Tuesday through Thursday. Further, extended detentions (until 5 PM) will be assigned for students with chronic tardiness. Additionally, students may be excluded from school activities for chronic lateness. We know the traffic in this area is a challenge and we are appreciative of parent support in helping students to arrive on time to school each day!
8th Grade DC Trip
As many know, our trip to Washington, D.C., was reinstated. As was communicated at the coffee, the cost of the trip has increased because of transportation and lodging. We are adjusting to make the trip more attainable for all our students. Our PTO parent community recently started a GoFundMe to help subsidize the cost of the trip. Please see the link below and consider sharing it with your families, friends, relatives, and loved ones. Thank you for your continued support.
