Decomposing Fractions & Bee-Bots
Computer Science Integration Activity: 4th Grade
Math Standards:
4.NF.B.3: b. Decompose a fraction into a sum of fractions with the same denominator in more than one way (e.g., 3/8 = 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8; 3/8 = 1/8 + 2/8; 2 1/8 = 1 + 1 + 1/8 = 8/8 + 8/8 + 1/8) recording each decomposition by an equation. Justify decompositions using a visual fraction model.
Computer Science Standards:
4.AT: Algorithmic Thinking 1) Examine logical reasoning to predict outcomes of an algorithm. 2) Use flowcharts to create a plan or algorithm.
Here are ways to decompose 5/8ths
Computer Practice & Play with Fractions
simulation: a computerized model that mimics the operation of a system. You can safely test different scenarios and see changes occur.
Computer Science Integration
Computer Science Vocabulary:
Algorithm: A step-by-step process to complete a task.
Command: a task given to run a program
Input: The signals, data values, or instructions sent to a computer
Run: to execute a program
Bug: an error in a program
Debugging: The process of finding and correcting errors (bugs) in programs.
Pair Programming: Collaborating with a partner(s) to develop and/or execute a program. An example of pair programming might be one person is the driver (the one working the hardware), and one is the navigator (the person sharing the code to the driver and checking that it makes sense).
Rules for the Robots:
Hold carefully (2 hands).
Use on the floor.
Pick up if it hits an obstacle.
Do not push or pull the Blue-Bot, or drive it like a toy car.
Take turns. (Rotate jobs.)
