April is Autism Awareness Month
April is Autism Awareness Month, and Tuesday, April 2nd is World Autism Awareness Day. Please wear BLUE on Tuesday to support our AMS family members with Autism!
People First Language
Although it is Autism Awareness Month we would like to take the time to teach our students, and our community, about people first language. Below are examples of people first language that you could share. We always put the person before the disability. For example, a person with Autism versus an Autistic person or a person who uses a wheelchair versus confined to a wheelchair or in a wheelchair.
The only group who does not use this language is the deaf community. They believe that deafness is part of their identity, so referring to them a a deaf person is considered correct.

Reminders
STUDENT DROP OFF
Remember that student drop off is from 7:00-7:20. Any student getting dropped off after 7:20 should be dropped off at the front of the school. Please see our website for more information.
PERSONAL HANDHELD ELECTRONIC DEVICES - CELL PHONES
Personal electronic devices, including cell phones and earbuds, are not allowed at AMS. Knowing that students and parents use cell phones for before and after school safety, we know students will have them at school. They need to be in student lockers at all times. If you need to reach your student, please call the school at 333-6655, and we will connect you with your student.
CELL PHONES and Ear Buds: We know students will have them so please follow these simple rules.
- Electronic devices MUST be kept in a student’s LOCKER during the school day (7:15 am - 2:00 pm).
- Students can only access their cell phones once the walkers get released.
- Teachers may allow a student to check their phones if they ask permission.
- Any VISIBLE cell phone will be collected and kept in a secure location in the office until the end of the school day.
- Students are responsible for picking up phones at dismissal.
STUDENT DRESS CODE
The School Committee recognizes that responsibility for the dress and appearance of students rests with individual students and their parent(s)/guardian(s). The School Committee will not interfere with this right unless students' personal choices disrupt the school program or affect the health or safety of others.
Dress Code Guidelines: as determined by the administration for Auburn Middle School, developed to support the educational process:
- Appropriate clothing should cover the entire torso. Exposed undergarments are considered inappropriate for school.
- Safe and suitable footwear should be worn at all times.
- Hats and hoods cannot be worn in the building except for religious or ethnic head coverings. Students will be asked to remove hoods, and hats will be kept in the office until the end of the school day.
Students breaking the dress code may be asked to cover, change, or call home for a change of clothes. Continual dress code infractions will result in disciplinary actions ranging from detention to suspension.
WAYS WE KEEP STUDENTS SAFE AT AMS
Safety is our first priority. This is why we have high expectations for student behaviors. It is why we train to evacuate and we train for intruders. Every staff member has multiple ways to access administration and are capable of making emergency calls as needed.
All the doors are locked all the time, external and internal
Hard wired phones in each room
Cameras that are observed
Secure front entrance
Badged staff
Practice safety measures
Staff members every 10 feet in the building
We do not have unannounced visitors
Bates mentors are trained and have background checks
Staff have multiple communication devices to contact others for immediate assistance
Reminder of rules around personal technology at school (Cell Phones)
