Language Arts
The kids have been hard at work learning the procedure for "Read to Self" this week. Once they are able to read the whole time, get started right away, stay in one spot, read quietly, and build their reading stamina (yes, we go over what the word 'stamina' means haha) for 15 minutes at a time, we will move on to the next station which will be "Work on Writing".
Take Home Readers: Other than reviewing sight words and letters/numbers if your student needs to, the Take Home Readers that get sent home once a week will be the only "homework" that your students brings home in Kindergarten. Please take some time within a week of receiving it to have your child read it to you, sign your name somewhere on the book, and send it back to school so your child can earn a Dojo point.
Lowercase Alphabet: All students can be reviewing the lowercase letters of the alphabet.
Sight Words: I, the, can, we
Letter Sounds: /m/, /a/
Math
This week our sorting focus has been sorting by two characteristics such as color and shape or shape and size. Encourage sorting during your child's play at home! They can sort Legos by color, dolls by eye or hair color, blocks or shape, size, or both characteristics...the possibilities are endless! :) Below you will see pictures of the class working on using manipulatives to help them solve math problems. Our next unit will focus on patterning.
Science
Our current unit is focusing on the needs of plants and animals. So far we have discovered that animals need food and shelter. We have gotten to watch a few fun video clips of how animals build their homes as well as forage for food! Ask your student how a woodpecker, raccoon, and quail look for their food!
Social Studies
So far this year, our Social Studies has focused on our HAWKS quality which is RESPECT. We have discussed a little bit about community and what it means to be a good citizen.
