The Horseshoe Review
The Copeland PTO Newsletter
President's Corner by Karen Thomas
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Our want to give a Thank You to our 5th Grade Liaisons Suhair Noufal and Tien Chen for organizing the 5th grade luncheon. The students enjoyed going to the play and coming back to a catered lunch. Thank you to all the chaperones who came to the play with us to help with the students and Thank You to all the volunteers who decorated the cafeteria or served food. The day would not have been as special as it was for the students without all your support. I wanted to give a special Thanks to Alejandra Elizarraras for helping me with getting the decorations set for the catered lunch.
Only two more weeks and the students and staff will be out for the winter break. It will be a busy time at Copeland until then. The 5th grade music program will be on Tuesday, December 11th. This date will also be our first general PTO meeting for the year. Please plan on joining us that evening at 6:30 pm for a short business meeting followed by a performance from our 5thgrade students. What a great way to kick off the season! OurHoliday parties will be held on Friday, December 21st during school hours. You should be receiving a letter or email from your homeroom coordinator indicating ways that you can help with your child’s party. Look for the party schedule in today’s Horseshoe Review. Please be aware that siblings cannot be accommodated at these parties. Remember to honor any ‘no parking’ zones and be prepared to show your ID when entering the school for the parties if you have not gotten your v-soft sticker.
Thanks to the numerous volunteers at Copeland. The services you provide are invaluable and very much appreciated!

The garden by Tracy Reynolds
On the November 14th the 3rd graders got to sample sweet potatoes hash browns made from sweet potatoes that they picked from the garden. Most of the kids loved it. On November 29th the they pulled weeds and cleaned up the vegetable gardens. They did a great job. With the cleaned beds the 3rd graders got to plant carrots. Most of them were surprised at how small the carrots seeds are. Hopefully in a few months each students will get to take a carrot home.
During the Christmas break we will need volunteers to help water the garden. If you are available please email me at tracy.b.reynolds@gmail.com.
colonial day
Our Fifth Graders experienced colonial America on Friday, November 16 and what a day it was! The children and adults came in their colonial day wear and looked fantastic! They experienced many aspects of colonial life from hands on candle making, to quilting, penmanship with feather quills, a spinning demonstration, colonial food, making homemade butter, hat making, colonial children's games and even a history lesson from Ben Franklin. The children enjoyed the immensely and we couldn't have done it without Karen Thomas, Jennifer Emerson, Patricia Penn, Shawn Lapina, Shanna Wang, Stephanie Kollar, David Dummond, and Annette Carter for taking on leadership roles , preparing and leading the children through their stations. These volunteer station chairs put in hours and hours of work before the big day! Also a special thanks to the numerous volunteers who gave of their time to work each station! This event could not have happened without all these volunteers who gave of their time.
Karen Thomas did a great job with the hospitality suite for the volunteers and our special guests Ben Franklin and the Spinner.
I would also like to thank our amazing fifth grade teachers and Tess Eugenio who are the real experts on this Colonial Day Event. Thanks for answering our numerous questions, making the schedule and all your wonderful suggestions. We have a great school and great volunteers.
Thanks to all for making this event happen for our 5th graders,
Tracy Reynolds
