Thomas Hayward: Deputy Head Prefect of Hamilton Boys' High School 2021
Thomas Hayward (Year 13 - Argyle House Head Prefect), being congratulated by the Headmaster, Mrs Susan Hassall, after being announced as Deputy Head Prefect of Hamilton Boys' High School, at the full, school assembly on Wednesday 10th February.
New Boarders' Induction & Families BBQ
Kia ora koutou
We are now coming to the end of week 2 and all 47 new boarders are fully engaged in hostel life and the many activities, both on and off-site, that have been organised for them. There has been a lot of smiles over the past two weeks! The positive interaction between all year levels has been pleasing, with the Year 12 & 13 Senior Leaders and Prefects continuing to impress with their guidance and care of our young men.
I have included many photos from the events that have taken place so far.
WAIMARINO WATER AND ADVENTURE PARK
All new boarders, senior leaders, prefects and staff are looking forward to experiencing the water park in Tauranga this Saturday. We can take 100 boarders, so will top up the two buses with current boarders willing to come along. The hostel will remain open as usual for those boys that remain on-site. A reminder the hostel pays for all transport to our induction activities and the families pay for their son's entry fee which is charged to their hostel account.
BBQ FOR ALL FAMILIES
A reminder that the hostel families BBQ for both new and existing boarders takes place this Sunday from 5.30pm, Sunday 14 February. All boys are required to return by 5.00pm on Sunday evening and they have been reminded numerous times. From 6.25pm, all boarders and families will move down to the pool to watch the Matthew Allen Cup hostel house competition swimming sports, commencing at 6.30pm. We require some parents to volunteer to swim in the Staff, Prefects, Parents race, so bring your togs!
It is important that all boys return by 5.00pm to enable them to represent and/or support their hostel house, Bennett or Sutherland, after dinner. The two heads of Bennett and Sutherland have named and prepared their teams for Sunday already. This is one of two occasions during the year when all boys are expected to return on a Sunday evening, the other being the Argyle Prizegiving in early November. I thank you, in anticipation of your support.
The staff and I look forward to meeting you all again on Sunday evening.
Ngaa mihi

U15 'Condors' Sevens Team, NZSS National Champions, December 2020
Quinn Boyle (Year 11), Marathon Swim, 40.2km, length of Lake Taupo
Quinn had been in training for this event for the last year having completed three other solo swims in 2020, ranging in length from 12 to 30km distances in the ocean and lakes.
Setting off at 4am and 13.46 hours later, Quinn completed the Lake Taupo swim. He had to dig deep mentally and physically, as he battled the sun and the cold lake water temperatures.
Quinn was not allowed to wear a wetsuit and couldn’t touch the support boat when he stopped to eat and drink.
Quinn is now the second youngest male to complete this marathon swim, and has now been invited to swim in other marathon swim events for charity, such as the Westpac Helicopter 20km Auckland swim in March this year.
Quinn set up a Givealittle page and personally fundraised a further $1000 for the Taupo event, which he will donate to HBHS, Otamarakau Primary School and the Cancer Society.
All of us here at HBHS are so proud of your achievements Quinn.

Dorm Leaders Term 1
They all receive guidance and support at their weekly Tuesday evening meetings with Matua Mita Graham, Senior Master, and the six Year 13 Senior Leaders & Prefects who all reside at Grove.
The Dorm Leaders are extremely conscientious when carrying out their role to ensure the efficient day-to-day running of the hostel, especially at morning wake-up and check-off, and again at lights-out each evening. They also provide the care and guidance needed for our new and young boarders in the junior dorms.

On 30-31 January 2021, Ricci with a 10 Handicap, played the Intermediate Grade of the Kaitaia Maori Golf Tournament. This is the first time Ricci played the course, and with rounds of 81 & 80, was good enough to win his section by 4 shots.
To wrap up the weekend, Ricci also received the award/scholarship “In Memory of Rae Filipaina” the Filipaina Trust Award for a Junior golfer who shows potential at golf, not limited to scores on the course but all round golf etiquette on and off the course.
All members of the Onewhero Maori Golf Committee congratulate Ricci on his achievements, and extend their appreciation to the Filipina Whanau for supporting our Rangatahi.
Daniel Garland (Year 10): Equestrian Sports NZ, #GameChanger
Daniel Garland, another young equestrian showing us the way, did an “exceptional job – in fact the best gate person at any show we’ve been to!” at the recent Waikato Show Hunter at Taupō NEC according to Kirsten Seamer.
Kirsten said that Daniel isn’t very old and “he volunteered like a champ and did a very professional job”. He did the gate for the pony ring for Cat A and Cat B and then rode his own pony in Cat C.
Good on you Daniel, you’re a perfect example of what we mean when we talk about a #GameChanger: someone who lives the values which our Change the Rein campaign is all about. Being helpful and professional are definitely on that list, so a great big thank you!

Many more books have been placed on the shelves in the Junior TV lounge for the Year 11s to read at the start of their prep session.

HBHS Headmaster's Message Tuesday 9 February

Dear Families of Hamilton Boys’ High School,
As we begin Week Two of our new school year, I write to thank you all for your genuine and real support, in ensuring that we have enjoyed a very settled and positive first few days together, as the 2021 school family.
I welcome all back to the 2021 year, and offer a very special, heartfelt welcome to all families new to the school. We look forward to meeting with you and to sharing the years ahead. Thank you for choosing Hamilton Boys’ for your son.
I am very happy to have this opportunity to congratulate our Year 12 and Year 13 students on the outstanding Level One and Two NCEA results they have achieved as a group. Both Level One and Level Two results are a strong improvement on the previous year, a testament to the commitment of the boys and of you, through your support and encouragement through the difficulties of the year we shared in 2020. I am proud of the young men of our Senior School, who will, this year, be continuing in their quest for academic excellence.
At each of our year level Assemblies last week, the Deans spoke of the key value we stand for as a school - that of arete, the value of being determined to be the very best one can be, in all aspects of life - academic, sport, cultural, and in our character. It is through the focus on arete, by each individual in our world, that together, we are able to realise our vision, and our shared goal of being a school in which all can thrive, and a school which provides a safe, happy and secure, affirming world for all.
I take this opportunity too, to congratulate Eushin Kang, our Dux of 2020, for his outstanding achievement as a Premier Scholar, one of the top ten students academically in New Zealand.
Eushin gained three Outstanding Scholarships and two Scholarships, and was top in New Zealand in Accounting. He will be recognised for his achievement in Parliament House later in the year.
We also congratulate current students Michael Lin, who in the Cambridge IGCSE examinations gained Top in New Zealand in Co-ordinated Science, and Top in the World in IGCSE Mathematics. And Tebijan Kalarathan, who gained Top in the World in AS Economics. Outstanding achievements from these dedicated young men, who have been ably supported by their teachers. I look forward to future successes from these talented young men, who embody the value of arete in all that they undertake.
As we begin our Summer sporting calendar, I look forward very much to meeting our families and the young men of our world, as they contribute through their involvement in the sports and activities of their choice. Every young man makes a difference to our world, in so many different ways. We are indeed blessed.
I wish you all a fulfilling, rewarding term ahead with your son, as we work together to provide every opportunity for him to be happy, confident, and successful. Thank you for your support and your care.

HBHS Start of Year Reminders
Emailed to all Parents/Caregivers by the school on Friday 5th February
Dear Parents/Caregivers
It is timely for us to send out some reminders about life at HBHS, as we come to the end of our first week together. We appreciate your support in ensuring that your son is as safe, and as settled as possible, as we begin the year together.
- Drop off and pick up: Boys are NOT to be dropped off or picked up from inside the school grounds. Please arrange a suitable meeting point to pick up your son after school, away from the school grounds.
- Bikes: Boys are to lock their bike INSIDE the new bike enclosure. This is located between the Horticulture Room and the Carpentry Room (near the hockey turf) We have already had bikes stolen that were locked outside the bike enclosure.
- Sun safety: We strongly encourage your son to have a school bucket hat or school cap in this very hot weather. The shop is now restocked and ready to sell these during the day. The bucket hats are heavily subsidised by the school, to make them very affordable for everyone.
- Uniform and grooming: All boys have had their first assembly now and have been given strong messages about their grooming, in particular their hair length and tidiness. Please ensure your son is up to the required HBHS standard with his grooming.
- Road safety: Please discuss with your son his safety around the busy streets bordering our school. After school particularly, our school community is very hectic with cars and buses. Encourage your son to use crossings where possible.
