Literacy Connections
Literacy Links & Resources
November 1, 2015
One of my big takeaways from the TC Coaching Institute was around the learning process. This infographic really shows the sometimes uncomfortable feelings that accompany deep learning. When we notice this in ourselves it helps us understand what our students go through. By taking risks and being brave ourselves, we model how these behaviors lead to both a growth mindset and successful learning.
I'm changing up the format of the Literacy Connections Newsletter in an effort to help you navigate to the resources & links that are most relevant for you. You will now find four sections:
- The Kitchen Sink
- K-2 Connections
- 3-5 Connections
- The Book Buzz
Happy Reading!

Books will be available for purchase at the event. The evening is open to the general public and is a great opportunity for young readers to meet the faces behind the stories they read and love!
Now in it's 3rd year, space is limited and fills up quickly so if you're interested click here for more details and registration information. I hope to see many of you there this year!

Why have a lemonade stand when you can have a story stand? That’s what Rufus, a boy with a big imagination, decides. And once he’s in business, he starts creating little gems for his friends and family. Millie and Walter trade a shell for his story called “Why Orange Is the Best Color.” Rufus writes little sister Annie a story for her birthday about a girl who shrinks to the size of a teacup. Sara trades flowers for a story about a family of buttons. And then they all sit down and read the wonderful stories together.

But come the end of summer, unthinkable things begin to happen. Sylvie is suddenly, mysteriously whisked away to school on the mainland. Flor’s mother leaves to take care of Flor’s sick grandmother and doesn’t come back. Her big sister has a secret, and Flor fears it’s a dangerous one.
Meanwhile, a geologist and his peculiar daughter arrive to excavate prehistoric trilobites, one of the first creatures to develop sight. Soon Flor is helping them. As her own ability to see her life on this little lump of limestone evolves, she faces truths about those she loves—and about herself—she never imagined.

Crenshaw is a cat. He's large, he's outspoken, and he's imaginary. He has come back into Jackson's life to help him. But is an imaginary friend enough to save this family from losing everything?
Beloved author Katherine Applegate proves in unexpected ways that friends matter, whether real or imaginary.
