"l'école de Léon"
The Honors 7 students have been working on how to navigate through stories and learned a bunch of new vocabulary for an entire book. After receiving a lesson on how to "tier" their vocabulary words to make it more manageable, the students used the class vocabulary list to create personalized vocabulary lists based on their acquisition of the language. As a result, all of the students felt confident about moving on to the second half of their story, "l'école de Léon," and are eager to see how the main character, Léon, reacts to his first day of kindergarten!
Darwin's Theory
This week all of the Silver Pod students participated in a natural selection simulation. Each student a different tool to catch their "food" and then discussed which adaptation was the best fit for that environment. The students loved learning about Darwin's theory in a hands-on, interactive lesson.
Applying the Pythagorean Theorem
Students were tasked with coming up with a strategy for finding the distance between two points located on the classroom floor without using a measuring device. The only information the groups were provided with was that each tile was 1 square foot. Students used supplies to create a right triangle on the floor, count the length of each leg, and use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the hypotenuse. Each group then created a poster to model the steps for finding distances on a coordinate plane.
"El nuevo hogar de los siete cabritos"
The 8th grade Spanish 1 read the story "El nuevo hogar de los siete cabritos" the new home of the 7 little goats by Alma Flor & Isabel Campoy. In picture 1 students are retelling the story using only the pictures from the story and in picture 2 students are writing a book report emphasizing the setting, main events, conflict and resolution and a brief summary using their own words.
Black History Month
Mrs. Anzalone’s English class created a Black American Art Museum in the Gold Pod hallway. Each student selected a famous Black American to portray. The project consisted of researching and documenting facts, making a poster, and writing and performing a short speech.
Mock Election Comes to Fernwood!
This past Friday, Mrs. Berry's and Mr. Medica's Social Studies classes were given the opportunity to learn about our political system. They were educated on what Primary Elections are and how they are used to select a candidate from each party. Furthermore, they learned about the two prevalent political parties in America today: the Democratic Party and the Republic Party. Utilizing BrainPOP, the students learned the history of both parties. They also learned about the general pollical preferences of each party, and some key individuals from each party like Bill Clinton and George Bush. Additionally, the students were given some information on the current candidates from each party seeking nomination in this year's election for the Presidency. Finally, the students were give the chance to vote in a mock election hosted by the State of New Jersey. In closing, no matter who wins the Primary Elections, our students were the real winners today!
CLIMATE and CULTURE
Fernwood’s 7th grade students flew into Valentines Day with a smooth landing on Fernwood Flight Day!
The 7th grade teams took flight day head on with a full schedule of events. Activities included a design challenge where students planned, created and tested paper airplane models. In addition, students attended an Aviation Expo where they collected information, asked questions and observed various groups from the community including a former Thunderbird pilot, Colonel “Tazz”, FAA engineers, Civil Airpatrol, retired Airforce Colonel, a JetBlue pilot, The New Jersey Aviation Education Council, and a meteorologist, Joe Martucci of The AC Press, just to name a few. Students who successfully completed their sheets were entered into a raffle. Finally, students were able to choose one Aviation STEAM elective to attend. There were several election options including, Coast Guard Search and Rescue demonstration/presentation, Augmented/Virtual Reality, Flight Simulators and Flying Gliders. The day was a huge success and highlighted the district’s STEAM initiative with a focus on aviation. We look forward to the STEAM night for 6th-8th grade planned for March 26th.
The Fernwood STEM team, Christina Kupcinski, Tracey Latshaw, Janice Blaine, Ashley Mosetti and Gina Wenzel, would like to thank all of the students, teachers and administration for making this day AMAZING!
Super Staff of the Week
Fernwood Pop
Fernwood Pop is a student run business funded by a gracious and generous mini-grant from the EHT Education Foundation. The students assist with labeling and the delivery of the popcorn. This gives the students the opportunity to interact with staff and to provide customer service. Each week the students track the sales and determine the most popular flavor of the week. The goal is to go on a trip with the students to Careme's at Atlantic Cape Community College where they can experience another student run establishment. Thank you for your continued support of Fernwood Pop.
