Instructional Focus
Students in Mrs. Brewton's course created TRE's Term 3 newsletter and learned how to act as journalists while interviewing students and teachers for our Special Edition news segments. These students were so inspired by the www.Values.com videos that Ms. Katie shared that they decided to create their own public service announcements for fellow students. Take a look at their video on YouTube!
Students in Mrs. Jones' IF course combined their creativity with technology to create Media Festival projects. Winners moving on to the county level are: Tristin, Shelby, Kate, Daniel, Cambrya, and Sheldon with their video on Bullying; Denise and Lily with their video on Space; Ms. Chryssochoos' class with a PSA on The Great Pacific Garbage Patch; and Ms. Welch's class with a PowerPoint (moving stills) project on Pollution. Congratulations and good luck at the county competition. As soon as I get the results, I will share them with all of you.
Each term the I.F. groups change based on available space and student choice. Students began their final I.F. course for this year on March 15th.
Kindergarten - Third Grade
Kindergarten- Students are continuing to work on projects, logic and critical thinking and creativity. During Term 3 we explored STEM activities. We created a noise maker and discussed the New Year. We created leprechaun rockets and discussed for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Most of our activities are hands-on, so papers will not be sent home regularly. However, folders will be sent home at the end of each term. This term I have included several Logic and Critical Thinking activities. You can keep the papers, please return the folder.
1st - 3rd grade Project: Genius Hour
Driving Question: Each student created their own driving question, conducted research, wrote an informational paper, created a project and presented it to the class.
Research:
· Students researched and answered their driving questions.
· Students were encouraged to use multiple resources to conduct their research.
Hands-on:
· Students created a unique project based on their individual topic. Some students made a quiz, some made a imovie, one student created a GoFundMe account, others made puppet shows, and some students made a play. Their creativity never ceases to amaze me.

Digital Learning Day: We use technology everyday, but on this day we shared our great ideas with other teachers in the county through our DLD blog. We also shared our ideas on Twitter. Watching students use technology that didn't exist 20 years ago makes my heart happy for the future :)
Coming Term 4: K-2nd We have Monarch caterpillars on the way. We will explore the life cycle of a butterfly. We are in desperate need of milkweed plants, as that is the only plant a Monarch caterpillar will eat. If anyone can find and donate milkweed plants, it will be greatly appreciated. I have contacted a local nursery to locate milkweed for us. Fingers crossed we get some in before April. 3rd grade will participate in Market Day and complete a mini-Genius Hour project, as well. (Of course, we will be sharing the Monarch caterpillars with everyone.)
Student Spotlight
Olivia & Njeri, 4th Grade
Kate & Kayla, 5th Grade
Mrs. Burge's 3rd grade class
Taylor researched F.I.P. on the internet and she interviewed her veterinarian. To raise money, she sold cupcakes and created a GoFundMe account. In total, Taylor raised nearly $600 for research. She exceeded our expectations!
4th & 5th Grade
- select their own partners (or work alone, if they desired to)
- select the standard for their lesson
- set their own due dates
This highlights reel showcases some of the students' amazing lessons!
On Digital Learning Day, our "guest teachers" Skyped with Mercer University students who are currently student-teaching in other Henry County schools! TRE students were able to ask questions to garner advice about teaching their own classes for the project. Watching them teach their lessons really showed how they like to learn best. Our guest teachers found fun ways to ensure their classes were involved in the learning!
For Term 4, students will work on one final project. "Genius Hour", allows students to identify their own topic, research it, and present it! We will start Genius Hour after the Georgia Milestones testing is completed.
