Principal's Message
Talofa, Kia ora, Malo e lelei, Habari, Hello, Sawadee, Kia orana, Dia duit, Ma muka chini,
This week we have Super Smash coaches coming in to teach cricket skills. All students will need to wear shorts and a tee-shirt for this activity on Wednesday.
Mass on Saturday night was a lovely celebration of St Pius X. Great to see our parishioners there and Father Carl said a great Mass.
Tough Guy/Gal is this Thursday for our senior class. Miss Mckibbin and Annie Asisata will accompany the students for this. Our teachers are consistently undergoing professional development that will enable best practice in their classrooms. This week Miss Richards underwent six-bricks training that is useful for social coaching, and Miss Mckibbin Maths PD.
Matua James is joining us for singing each week, which is fantastic.
Just for your information, if there are families in our community who are finding things tricky please do let us know. We have some options available to help our families out.
Our Good Shepherd Shop in town is looking for donations of good second hand goods. If you have books, bikes, toys or clothes you would like to donate please take into the shop or bring along to school and we will pass them on.
If you know of a family or relatives, friends, workmates, who would be interested in visiting our school or enrolling please do let them know to come along for a visit. We would love to meet them.
Last week I was fortunate to meet with several other Principals to look at new curriculum, and how best to meet the needs in our schools. It was wonderful to meet other Principals who share work for a common good.
On another note.
Student behaviour is generally very good at our school. Students know the rules and are ready to learn and participate. However there are from time to time a student who chooses not to follow school rules. Here at Bishop Gaines School, all students and staff have the right to be respected, and when rules and values are followed this occurs. Teachers have talked to all students on expectations and what that looks like at our school. Please have a korero with your child to refresh our school rules and expectations, thanks you.
We are holding a number of fundraising initiatives this term, so keep your eye out for these. Thanks to Kathleen who donated orchid plants to sell. They have been selling like hot cakes!

Catholic Character
Pope Pius X
Pope Pius X (Italian: Pio X; born Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto, 2 June 1835 – 20 August 1914) was head of the Catholic Church from 4 August 1903 to his death in 1914. Pius X is known for vigorously opposing modernist interpretations of Catholic doctrine, promoting liturgical reforms and scholastic theology. He initiated the preparation of the 1917 Code of Canon Law, the first comprehensive and systemic work of its kind. He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church and is the namesake of the traditionalist Catholic Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X.
Pius X was devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of Our Lady of Confidence; while his papal encyclical Ad diem illum took on a sense of renewal that was reflected in the motto of his pontificate. He advanced the Liturgical Movement by formulating the principle of participatio actuosa (active participation of the faithful) in his motu proprio, Tra le sollecitudini (1903). He encouraged the frequent reception of Holy Communion, and he lowered the age for First Communion, which became a lasting innovation of his papacy.
