Early Literacy Instruction
According to the National Institute for Literacy (2001), phonemic awareness is the ability to think about and work with individual sounds in spoken languages. Before children learn to read, they need to be aware of how sounds work. Teachers should integrate phonemic awareness instruction in the curriculum to help children learn to read and spell.
PHONOFUN: First Series in Workshops For Essential Instructional Early Literacy Practices
If a child knows 10 letter sounds they can read 10,000 words
The first workshop in the series. Dr. Laura Tortorelli referred to the Florida Center for Reading as a great resource. This Reading Mama is another great source.
Parent Engagement PreK-3rd
The second workshop in the series. Dr. Patricia Edwards spent the day with Flint Community Schools. She talked about a different way of getting parent engagement that focused on student achievement.
Making Meaning from Reading Pre-K-1st
The third workshop in the series is April 18th from 4-6:00 PM in the Curriculum Cave at the administration building. Dr. Tortorelli will be presenting and it can be found on Course Where under PhonoFun April 18th.

Michigan's Integrated Behavior & Learning Support Initiative
Students are more likely to succeed when schools address behavior and learning together. Michigan’s Integrated Behavior and Learning Support Initiative (MIBLSI) partners with school districts to help implement and sustain these supports for improved student outcomes.
MEA: Third Grade Reading Bill, Beginning next year, In 2017-18 districts must:
*Assess K-3 reading skills three times per year, the first within 30 days of school starting
*Provide written notice to parents of a deficiency
*Provide an Individual Reading Plan developed by the teacher, principal, parents, and other pertinent school personnel, for any deficient students within 30 days after identification
*Target specific areas of professional development for teachers
*differentiate and intentsify professional devlopment for teachers
*utilize a literacy coach from the ISD or in-house
