5/6 Building at Georgetown Updates
4-14-23
Letter from Mrs. McClure
Hello Future 5/6G Families and Students,
I hope you all had an amazing spring break and were able to spend time with family and friends. We are now in the home stretch until summer break! I just wanted to send out a quick reminder about next week's PTC meeting and a few other updates. Our first PTC meeting will take place on Thursday, April 20th from 6:30-7:30 p.m at Baldwin Street Middle School. At this meeting, attendees will nominate and vote in our first PTC board. From there, we will work on our creating the by-laws and start planning events for this upcoming school year. We cannot wait to partner with our PTC to support the great work that our teachers will do everyday and provide exciting experiences for our students both during and outside of the school day.
At the end of this week or the beginning of next week, your child will receive their 5/6 t-shirt! Please mark your calendars as we would love for all of our incoming fourth and fifth grade students to wear their 5/6 t-shirts on Friday, May 12th! I will send out reminders as this date comes closer. Once again, thank you to all of our students that submitted t-shirt designs for the t-shirt contest and congratulations to Juliet Dykema for designing the winning t-shirt! I'm so excited to see all of our students wearing this shirt and joining together as one school!
Just a friendly reminder that if you have a sixth grade child signed up for band or orchestra, please check out the information below on renting or purchasing an instrument for this fall. Our music team has also started to reach out to families about securing an instrument for this fall.
I'm looking forward to seeing many of you next week on Thursday at BMS for the PTC meeting. Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the amazing summer-like weather!
In partnership,
Melanie

Special Election May 2nd
Hudsonville Public Schools will be asking voters to consider two important ballot initiatives on May 2, 2023.
First, there is the Non-Homestead Millage which, if approved, would levy 18 mills from commercial and industrial properties. This does not affect the taxes on residential property owners unless they own a second home in the district. The Non-Homestead Millage would generate approximately 6.8 million dollars, which makes up about 7.2% of the school district’s total general budget. Only 16% of voters cast a ballot in the 2022 Non-Homestead Millage Election, so your voice in this election is very important.
If passed, this millage will not increase taxes for families who only own a primary residence in the district. It will have minimal impact on the property tax bill of businesses and second homes because it will only be a continuation of the 18 mills that have been levied in past years. These funds are used to directly support staffing, programming, and various other student supports.
Next is the Sinking Fund Millage Renewal. A sinking fund is a savings account into which a local school district can deposit voter-approved local millage revenue in order to pay cash for projects or repairs as they arise rather than having to borrow through short-term notes or long-term bonds.
This enables the district to pay directly for unforeseen maintenance, such as a new boiler, a roof leak, parking lot repairs, updated technology infrastructure, and individual student technology. Hudsonville Public Schools has been operating with a sinking fund for the past 25 years, and continuous funding is needed since our buildings continue to age.
If you have any questions, please go to our website at www.hudsonvillepublicschools.org or call the district office at 669-1740.
Thank you for spending the time to learn about these two important ballot items.
Renting/Purchasing an Instrument
How do I get an instrument for band?
If you have a financial need, please contact a director!
Instruments can be purchased outright from a reputable source (Facebook Marketplace, local music store, etc.) but we encourage you to contact your director!
Family instruments are acceptable! We encourage you to have it looked over by a director or music store before the beginning of the year.
Our highest suggestion is the Meyer Music Rent-to-Own Program.
Additional information from Meyer Music can be found HERE.

Guarneri House, a local company right here in Hudsonville, is our recommendation. You may call Guarneri House to rent your instrument at 616-451-4960 or rent online at https://www.guarnerihouse.com/
If you don't know your size, please rent a 3/4 instrument. Instruments need to be reserved by May 1.
