K-5 Science and/or Social Studies -April 2021
Kindergarten Science
Organisms Impact on Environments
In this scope, students will learn how plants and animals (including humans) can change the environment to meet their needs.
In this activity, students organize a set of picture cards to show how animals change their environment.
Beaver Dam- Engineering Solution
Students design a solution that will block a river to create a pond that will provide a place for a family of beavers to build a home.
Plant Needs
In this scope, students will learn to describe patterns of what plants need to survive.
Water Me- Scientific Investigation
Students observe how taking away the basic need of water will affect plant growth and survival.
Shine a Light on Me-Scientific Investigation
Students observe how taking away the basic needs of light will affect plant growth and survival.
1st Grade Science
Animal Survival
In this scope, students will learn how animals use their external parts to help them survive, grow, and meet all of their needs.
Hmmm... I'm Hungry-Activity
In this activity, students use their sense of smell to identify substances that remind them of food versus smells that are unpleasant or dangerous.
Survivor-Activity
Students match cards to discover ways animals use their body parts to respond to their environments to grow and survive.
Plant Survival
Students will learn how plants use their external parts to help them survive, grow, and meet all of their needs.
Growing Sideways-Scientific Investigation
In this investigation, students observe how a plant grows toward the Sun.
Growing Spuds-Scientific Investigation
In this activity, students will explore how potato sprouts behave in a warm, moist environment versus a cold, dry environment.
2nd Grade Science
Properties and States of Matter
In this scope, students will learn to describe and classify different kinds of materials by their observable properties.
Melting Snowman- Activity
Students explore changing states of matter by adding and taking away heat.
Mystery Balloons-Activity
Students explore unknown objects and substances inside balloons in order to list their physical properties and determine their state of matter.
Properties and States of Matter- Inquiry Investigation
Students will work in groups to design and conduct an investigation about the observable properties of matter or the states of matter.
3rd Grade Social Studies
Social Studies Unit 4: Economy and Government of Missouri
- Overview of Unit:
Students will learn how the economy and local government works in Missouri.
Essential Questions:
- Why is the Missouri Constitution important to the citizens of Missouri?
- Why are the branches of government important to our state?
- I can explain major purposes of the Missouri Constitution.
- I can explain and give examples of how governments balance individual rights with common good to solve local community or state issues.
- I can identify and explain the functions of the three branches of government in the state government.
- I can recognize and explain the significance of Missouri symbols, such as the Gateway Arch, Official state symbols, etc.
4th Grade- Science
Science Unit 3: Physical Science: Part 2: Wavelength and Amplitude
How do amplitude and wavelength affect the motion of objects?
Explore 1: Wave Challenge
Students will use a model to observe amplitude and wavelength.
Explore 2: Waves and Motion
Students will investigate how wavelength and amplitude affect the motion of objects.
Explore 3: Waves in the Earth
Students will use the scientific knowledge they have gained as well as the 21st Century Skill of collaboration to design and construct a simple seismograph.
Science Unit 3: Physical Science: Part 2: Light Reflection
How are we able to see things?
Explore 1: Bull's-Eye!
In this activity, students will investigate reflection and how light travels to reflect a light beam around the room in an attempt to hit a bulls-eye in the least amount of time.
Explore 2: Let There Be Light!
In this activity, students will observe objects with and without light to determine which is easier to see.
Explore 3: Periscope
Students will use the scientific knowledge they gained as well as the 21st Century Skill of collaboration to design and construct a model to use to see an object hidden behind a wall.
5th Grade Science
Science Unit 4: Earth and Space Science Part 2: Earth's Systems Interactions
Students will use the scientific knowledge they gained as well as the 21st Century Skill of collaboration to design and construct a model to use to see an object hidden behind a wall.
Explore 1: The Four Spheres of Earth
Students work in groups to build a diorama highlighting the different spheres of Earth.
Explore 2: System Interactions
Students create a model to see how different earth spheres interact.
Explore 3: Modeling the Systems
Students work in groups to design a model illustrating how two of the following systems interact: the atmosphere, the biosphere, the geosphere, and the hydrosphere.
Science Unit 4: Earth and Space Science Part 2: Water Sources
Students work in groups to design a model illustrating how two of the following systems interact: the atmosphere, the biosphere, the geosphere, and the hydrosphere.
Explore 1: Where is the Water?
Students will investigate how Earth’s water is distributed.
Explore 2: Water Distribution Model Presentation
Students should create a poster and an infomercial that models the distribution of water on Earth.
Science Unit 5: Earth and Space Science Part 3: Reducing Human Footprint
Students should create a poster and an infomercial that models the distribution of water on Earth.
Explore 1: The Fertilizer We Use
Students will use a model to observe what happens to the soil that grows the food we eat and to the underground drinking water when chemicals are added during farming.
Explore 2: Acid Rain
Students must investigate the effects of acid rain by simulating the process, using chalk, water, and vinegar.
Explore 3: Saving Earth
Students gather research from multiple sources to determine what their community is currently doing to prevent pollution and save our Earth. Students will also research how people can help in this process and suggest at least two new things the community could implement to further its success in reducing the current human footprint.
Explore 4: NASA Needs Our Help!
Students will design a space-trash collector to clean up Earth’s outer atmosphere.
