Kia ora koutou
We have had a busy two weeks, we have farewelled Mrs Surgenor, Mr Baylis taking over the role as teacher of Room 9 students. Mrs Williamson has taken on the role of Performing Arts teacher for our visiting schools.
Home school partnership meetings have been undertaken with 67% of families choosing to talk with teachers compared to last years 56%.
School wide data has been collated, information from this used in planning for next step student learning and for tracking and monitoring progress across the school at Senior Management and Board level.
Data from our Positive Behaviour for Learning tracking, displays a massive decrease in behavioural incidents. Whilst we are aware we have had abseentism over Term 1 due to Covid we aim to replicate this in forthcoming terms.
Students are actively encouraged to participate in constructive activity during interval breaks.
Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, Rippa and sports practices occur during both breaks, and teams are preparing for their Inter School Intermediate Challenges coming up. For those who like quieter spaces the library is always open and chess is proving to be a firm favourite in here.
This week staff received Disestablishment Letters from the Board of Trustees terminating their jobs as at the end of the year. Staff now actively pursue future options.
As always staff are supported as best they can be at this difficult time and students are always at the forefront of all decision making.
Have a lovely weekend - hopefully the sun will continue to shine.

Planning for the Hāwera New School is well underway. We have a temporary Facebook which we will post information to keep you up to date with our progress. The recruitment of staff is obviously a vital piece of the puzzle for us this year.
The following people have been appointed to the senior leadership team and will be transitioning from their current schools to the new school during Term 2.
· Mahaki Akauola - Leader of Learning - Senior Pastoral
· Pauline Hurley - Leader of Learning - Senior Curriculum
· Susan Hopkins - Leader of Learning - Junior Pastoral
· Kylie Surgenor - Leader of Learning - Junior Curriculum
We have advertised for a Business Manager on seek and trademe this week. The middle leader roles have also been advertised in the Education Gazette this week. We will continue to use these forums throughout this year as we advertise roles in the new school. On Tuesday 31 May, 4pm at the new school office we will host an information session for anyone who is interested in a support staff role in the new school. You all are welcome.
We have secured an office at 61A Victoria Street for the remainder of the year. We are due to move in on Monday 23 May. This is where Hāwera New School staff will be based for the remainder of the year when they are connecting with students at our current schools. You are most welcome to pop in and visit us when we get settled in the new space.
Puanga is always an important time of the year, it is a time to reflect on the past and plan and celebrate the year ahead. As a community we have an exciting journey ahead of us over the next year so it is incredibly fitting that the release of key school information for the Hāwera New School will be at this time.
We are incredibly fortunate as a community that we have so many wonderful people working extremely hard in the background to ensure the success of our new school. We are really looking forward to sharing key information at Puanga.

As part of the local Kahui Ako (collective of schools) we are participating in the PIVOT Wellbeing in Schools tool this year.
Students who were at Tawhiti school last year will have experience with this already. Using PIVOT will support our KAURI Values, and help us to identify and provide support when students are feeling stressed, anxious or worried - especially relevant in this COVID world!
Attached is the student information page. Students will do an initial setting up survey then a quick weekly digital survey. Our specific data is only available to our school, although broad nonspecific trends can be gathered which the Kahui Ako will use to see how to best to support all students across our wider community.
The PIVOT tool focuses on wellbeing through developing resilience, ensuring students feel safe in school, belonging and general wellbeing. In a similar way to using snapshots and testing to assess learning levels, the PIVOT tool will help us to ensure all our students are feeling safe, comfortable and supported within our school.
If you have any questions or concerns around your child participating in this activity please contact your child's classroom teacher or Trisha via the office.
The excitement on the bus was apparent as everyone went through many renditions of the wheels on the bus, tutira mai nga iwi, and the school song. This evolved into a competition between boys and girls with the girls with Mr Baylis' support taking it out.
It set the mood for what was an inspiring day.
The stage was set and first up we were taught some hip hop dance moves. We listened to some inspiring speakers who have used music and dance to achieve their dreams and inspire others.
We sang, we danced, we enjoyed the free hot chocolates! It was a day we all enjoyed with many of us feeling inspired and ready to help others.
Initial permission slips have come home, and medical forms will be issued soon. If you have any questions or concerns around this please contact your child's teacher firstly or their Whanau Leader. Whanau support is essential for this to be successful, if you are able to come along and join the fun please let the teacher know so you can get Police Vetting forms.
Camp groups have been established and students issued job cards so they can earn their money. There are several ways to pay, either at the counter, by eftpos or cash, or internet banking. You must put your child's name as reference if internet banking, to ensure payments can be accurately coded. You are welcome to make automatic payments. If you were to start soon you could pay $15.00 per week and be all finished well before camp week - again with your child's name as reference. Our school account number is in the camp booklet for internet payments.
Attached is the booklet with what the focus is for each camp in case your child has forgotten why they chose that one. It has information about costs and dates etc in it as well as Camp Leader details so you can directly make contact. There will also be some fundraising happening to help fund the camps - more information as events arise.
The other essential part of a great camp is WHANAU SUPPORT - every camp needs some adults to help with the fun. You will need to be Police vetted so if you are keen please let Camp Leaders know and they will send you the forms. If we end up with too many we will need to hold a ballot.

Join us on Friday 20 May, 2022 as we Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora – Speak Up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying!
Students are encouraged to wear PINK and bring a gold coin donation to support this cause.
Celebrated annually around the globe, Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 when two students took a stand against homophobic bullying, after a peer was bullied for wearing a pink shirt.
