Shady Brook Vision Statement:
Knowledge Informs and Determines Success for Students
Shady Brook Mission Statement:
The mission of Shady Brook Elementary is to educate all students for success today and tomorrow.
From the Assistant Principal's desk. . .
To stay on track in school, students need to be present every day. Being absent for just two days every month of the school year can put a child behind academically. Students with regular attendance are more likely to ready well by the third grade and score higher on tests. They also tend to be more engaged in school and feel better about themselves.
Put your child on the path to success with these attendance strategies:
Make school a priority. Every absence (excused or not), can impact a child’s academic achievement. Talk to your child about how important their education is. Make daily routines for homework and waking up on time for school.
Make a plan. If your schedule or transportation situation makes getting your child to school a challenge, ask for assistance. Make a carpool or transportation plan with other parents or family members.
Report In. Know your school’s attendance policies. If an absence or early dismissal is unavoidable, contact us. If your family’s religious observances fall on school days, let teachers know early on which days your child will miss.
Carefully weigh sick days. If your child is sick, talk with your health care provider to determine whether they should stay home from school. If the doctor or nurse recommends that your child stay home, find out exactly how long and on what conditions he or she can return to class (for example, after 24 hours of antibiotics). Before keeping your child home make sure they aren’t faking symptoms.
Schedule wisely. Know your school’s calendar, and arrange doctor and dentist appointments after school, on weekends, or during holiday breaks, if possible. Resist the urge to schedule vacations when students will miss school. This gives students the impression that school is not a priority.
Sincerely,
Clarence Scott

Winter Break Holiday Parties
Friday, December 18th will be a very busy day at the Brook. We will have performances from our own Suzuki Strings students as well as the Bedford JHS band. Santa will be arriving by helicopter (weather permitting) around 10:25am. All the classrooms will have their Winter Holiday party starting at 2pm. In order to go to the classrooms for the party, you must sign in at the office using our Positive Proof system. There will be no paper sign-ins. Be sure you have your driver's license with you to sign in. We ask you to please be patient as there is only one sign-in machine per campus, so the line could be long.
We want to wish all our families a safe and enjoyable holiday.
Suzuki Strings Applications for 2016 - 2017
Shady Brook is one of HEB ISD’s Schools of Choice, offering the Suzuki Strings Program in Kindergarten through 6th grade to prepare students for the secondary orchestra program. Applications for new students will be available in January 2016 for the 2016-2017 school year. If you are interested in this program, please see Mrs. Campbell in the office for an application.
The Suzuki Method is an internationally renowned method for teaching young children to play an instrument. It is modeled on the Mother Tongue approach of language acquisition, and parents are integral to the process. For students to participate, a parent (or grandparent) must be available to attend a weekly lesson during the school day (during the FA/PE time) and practice daily with the child at home.

Counselor’s Corner
With Christmas soon approaching, it is a great time to teach children about the act of giving. Here are some simple ways to emphasize the message that giving can be as satisfying as receiving.
Take part in helping out a needy child/family at Christmas time. There are many non-profit organizations that sponsor programs to adopt children/families during this holiday season. Allowing your child to help pick out clothes, toys, and/or other needed supplies is a great way to get them directly involved and build empathy.
Donating to relief organizations in the aftermath of disasters is another way to engage children in giving.
Volunteer locally…help or have your child make cookies to take to a hospital, make cards to give to residents at nursing homes, or serve at a food bank or kitchen is a great way to get them involved in giving and serving.
Of course, kids are excited about the holiday season and the gifts they receive (it’s a wonderful time of the year), but at the same time, we can teach them about giving to others as well. Have fun, and Merry Christmas! Mrs. Evans
Notes from the Nurse... Catch some Zzz's
With so many items on our “to-do” list this holiday season, it is easy to forget the importance of getting a good night’s rest, especially for our children and students. Sleep is essential to a child’s health and growth and promotes alertness, memory and performance. Children who get enough sleep are more likely to function better and are less prone to behavioral problems and moodiness.
How Much Sleep Should My Child Get?
Age-----------------------------Hours of Sleep
0-2 months------------------10.5-18
2-12 months----------------14-15
1-3 years---------------------12-14
3-5 years---------------------11-13
