What's going on in class?
Math
This week in math was a stressful one due to the testing that we were completing. I am proud of them all for pushing through and doing their best! As the term comes closer and closer to a close I would ask that parents and students look at missing work so that it can be turned in before the last week. Next week in math will be another stressful one! We will be taking the interim testing which is a kind of pretest to our state assessments in April. This allows us to know what concepts we need to focus on before state assessments. We will also be completing our Module 2 Test. There will be a review for them to study with (may not use on the test) as well as the opportunity to correct the test after completion. Please remind students to have their school computer with them and charged for our testing! Have a good weekend!
Language Arts
This week in Language Arts students took the ORF and MAZE screening test. These tests are used to monitor a students reading fluency and comprehension. The ORF and MAZE tests are not for a grade, but help determine if students are making appropriate progress in their reading abilities.
Students also finished reading Hatchet and are preparing to write their second essay next week. Each student will be answering the question, “How do positive character traits help people overcome forces beyond their control?”. Students will quote and cite Hatchet as evidence to support their answers. Thursday and Friday of next week students will be taking the Interim test. This is practice for the state test that they will be taking in the spring. Students will need their computers here and charged all of next week.
Nightly homework reading-
Studies have shown that reading just 20 minutes per day will expose students to over a million words per year. This will then likely improve school grades as well as increase state standardized test scores. Please check with your child be make sure they are doing their nightly reading homework and filling out the log that goes with it.
Science
Thursday WINN is a STEM day. The challenge this week was to build a bridge that could span 30 cm and support 50 grams. Every team was successful - we decided we may need tougher restrictions in the future.
Social Studies
Welcome back from Thanksgiving, another week of school has passed! This week in social studies, the students completed their Ancient Civilization Kahoot Projects they had started before Thanksgiving Break. On Tuesday, the students began learning about Ancient China, by exploring famous locations like the Great Wall in Google Earth. On Wednesday and Thursday, the students learned about the Geography of China. On Friday, the students learned about the importance of the Yellow and Yangtze Rivers and how they influence both Ancient and Modern China. Next week we will continue to learn about Ancient China. Have a great weekend!

Student Expectations
Please charge tablets every night. Many students are leaving tablets in their locker. If your family would prefer that the tablet stays at school, please contact your student's CAT time teacher to make arrangements for secure storage and charging.
No Name Papers
We have had several no name papers turned in this year. If a student thinks they turned in an assignment but it shows missing in the grade book it is likely they didn't put a name on it. Please remind your child to always put their name, class, and hour on their papers.
