PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
As we are beginning the fourth quarter, I want to take a moment to review our classroom management procedures for our upper grade students.
Our 5th through 8th grade classes all follow a classroom management program based on the Discovery Program. The foundation of this program is the Redirect System when students are not displaying appropriate classroom behaviors. You may sometimes hear of this as Redirects, 6Ps/5As, Problem Solving Contracts, Yellow Sheets, and Pink Sheets.
The purpose of the Redirect System is for students to take ownership of their classroom behaviors. They are given multiple opportunities to acknowledge their behavior, and to correct it if they choose. This is the third year we have used this Redirect System, and we find it is very successful for the majority of our students, giving them the opportunity to quickly correct behaviors before they become significant classroom disruptions.
Here is an overview of the system.
Students are expected to follow the 6Ps/5As while at school. The 6Ps/5As stand for:
- Prompt
- Polite
- Participate
- Positive Mental Attitude
- Prepared
- Produce
- Actively Engaged
- Appropriate Body Language
- Appropriate Feedback
- Appropriate Eye Contact
- Ask Clarifying Questions
In 5th-8th grade, if a student is not following the 6Ps/5As at school, they will be asked the following series of questions during a series of Redirects (language may vary slightly from incident to incident).
- Redirect #1: Are you Ok and able to attend?
- Redirect #2: Which 6P/5A are you not following? Are you OK and able to attend?
- Redirect #3: Please meet me in the hallway to discuss what is getting in the way of your learning today. In the hallway the conversation will be around what behaviors are being shown in class, and how the student can change the behaviors in order to attend. Additionally our 7th/8th grade students will write out a Reflection Sheet while they are waiting for the teacher in the hallway.
- Redirect #4: Please go to the office as you aren't able to attend in class.
A student may respond at any point during the Redirect process that they are unable to attend. If they do so prior to the 4th redirect, then the student will be directed to the office or to the school counselor to get support.
After the 4th Redirect the student will complete a Problem Solving Contract at the office. After completing the contract, students must meet with the teacher and administrator to review their solutions the behavior that led to four redirects. The student may not return to that class period. Since students have missed a class period, they attend a lunch/recess detention to complete missed work. Based on the number of times they have been sent to the office after four redirects, the number of detentions increases:
- 1st time redirect to the office = 1 lunch/recess detention
- 2nd time redirect to the office = 2 lunch/recess detention
- 3rd time redirect to the office = 3 lunch/recess detention
4th time redirect to the office = parents spend 1/2 day with child in class or 1/2 day In School Suspension
If you have any questions about our Redirect System, please contact Mr. Cox or Mrs. Savory at the school office.
