EUSD Newsletter
March 2024
Message from the Superintendent
Greetings Emery community,
During the month of March, EUSD celebrates music, art, and all the different ways we can express ourselves during Arts Education Month and Music in Our Schools Month! We are also paying tribute to the extraordinary women who are leaders in our community and whose contributions have impacted our society during this Women’s History Month.
As our students prepare for the end of the school year, we would like to thank our incredible staff members for all their hard work guiding students through their lessons. We are so proud of our students’ progress and are always encouraging them to aim for greatness. Parents and guardians are always welcome to get involved with our school activities! Visit our office to learn more about how you can volunteer with us.
We look forward to seeing you at our end of school year celebrations!
Sincerely,
Dr. Quiauna Scott
Superintendent

Arts in Education Month
9th grade art students were given the opportunity to design a new Spartan logo for a t-shirt! Ms. Ruff describes the new logo as “fun and whimsical,” and “a design that complements all the other Spartan designs but does not replace them.” Students, parents, and teachers voted on their favorite design. The winning design will be printed on hoodies available for purchase. The student with the winning design will receive their own free hoodie.
Emery High students also created a design representing their entire student body and individual class. T-shirts with the silk-screen design will be displayed at the Spring Music and Art Show. We can’t wait to see the final products!
Music in Our Schools Month
Elevate Oakland and Town Business Vocal Ensembles are proud to have launched the Emeryville Vocal Program in partnership with EUSD at the start of the 2023-2024 school year, a weekly music offering engaging more than 150 TK-3rd graders in choral music and vocal instruction during the school day. The program is led by a team of professional vocalists and experienced teaching artists and focuses on foundational skills such as rhythm and movement, music listening skills and vocabulary, vocal tone, basic note values and simple melodies.
"While there have been several notable achievements so far this year," says lead teaching artist Robin J. Williams, "the biggest one has been that the kids have learned how to harmonize and follow directions, not only while singing, but while learning as well." Aside from learning foundational music skills, students have gained valuable experience in collaboration and teamwork as they work in unison with their classmates on group songs and performances. Creative expression exists at the center of the program's design, allowing students to celebrate their unique gifts and abilities through musical exploration.
Stay tuned for the concert on April 11, 2024!

Ms. Wright-Crichlow Recognized as Debate Coach of the Year
We are excited to share that our Emery High School Debate Coach Jessica Wright-Crichlow was selected as the National Association for Urban Debate Leagues (NAUDL) 2024 Coach of the Year. The Coach of the Year award recognizes that teachers who coach debate are essential to the Urban Debate Network’s core mission of helping students become more academically successful and civically engaged through the support and rigor for debate. This award honors that work.
This is a great achievement for our league, as Ms. Wright-Crichlow has been coaching for the last 10 years with NAUDL. This year, Ms. Wright-Crichlow used her leadership skills to advocate for sending four extra team members to NAUDL to observe the competition. With her support, the district approved the funding request.
On Monday, March 25, after school, Bay Area Urban Debate League (BAUDL) awarded Ms. Wright-Crichlow during the team’s practice. Congratulations!

Attendance Matters
From TK to high school, every day matters in shaping a brighter future, and our students’ presence in the classroom makes a significant difference in their education. Consistent attendance not only enhances academic achievement but also fosters a sense of responsibility and sets the stage for lifelong success. Whether it's showing up ready to learn or engaging in class activities, each moment counts in building a solid foundation for growth and development.
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to our students, families, and staff members for prioritizing attendance and creating a culture where every student can thrive. We recently celebrated students who have an attendance rate of 98% or better with Nothing Bundt Cakes!
Let's continue to work together to inspire and empower our students to reach their fullest potential. Here's to many more days of learning, growth, and success ahead!
