Roadrunner Report
Oakland Elementary News: March 22, 2024.
Principal Note
Dear Oakland Families-
I would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Spring Break. I hope you are able to spend quality time with those closest to you and return energized and determined to finish the year strong. We had a great last week of March is Reading Month here at Oakland. I really appreciate the efforts of our PTA and Oakland Reading Committee to make it all happen. When we return from Spring Break, Reading Month will be over but the goal is that the excitement generated sticks with our kids and helps them grow as readers throughout their lives.
Kindly,
-Mr. Jason Taylor
Solar Eclipse
On Monday, April 8, 2024, we will have the rare opportunity to view a total solar eclipse from just outside the path of totality. The eclipse will be occurring right around the time of dismissal. (For more information please see the Eclipse 2024 ). At Oakland we would like to provide a memorable learning experience for kids around this event. Our teachers are excited to experience the eclipse with the kids in a safe and meaningful way. As you may already know there are safety concerns with viewing the eclipse with the naked eye. Because of these safety concerns our PTA will be providing safe-viewing glasses for students and we will be asking for parents/guardians to give their students permission to participate in the class viewing. Permission slips were sent home this week. Please return them to your child's teacher as soon as possible and before April 3rd. For more information on viewing the eclipse safely to prevent eye damage, please visit the NASA website https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/future-eclipses/eclipse-2024/safety/
Literacy Night Photos!
Please enjoy a few photos from Family Literacy Game Night this week.
3rd - 5th Grade M-STEP
In the state of Michigan Students in grades 3-5 take the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress or M-STEP. This year students in all three grades will take computer adaptive Mathematics and English Language Arts tests. In addition fifth graders will take Social Studies and a Science tests. This is an opportunity for students to show all they have learned and the academic skills they have developed. We certainly do not want students to feel pressure from taking this test but we encourage and motivate them to perform their best on this test. Results of test such as these give good feedback on individual student's strengths and provide valuable data for school and district programing.
If you have a student in the 3rd-5th Grade please be on a lookout for the class testing schedule from your classroom teacher. The state testing window opens April 8th and lasts until the middle of May. Please be particularly mindful of ensuring your students are well rested, nourished, and on time for their testing days.
