Notre Dame Catholic Primary School
Foundations for Life Long Learning 28 March 2019
Dear Parents and Staff
We are all confronted with the ever-increasing cost of living with price rises on the essentials such as food, electricity, gas and water a regular occurrence. It can be difficult to balance the household budget and still provide for some of the small extras for our children. This said, I believe that we live in one of the greatest countries in the world and that what we may see as difficult would pale into insignificance in other parts of the planet. We are so fortunate in comparison and even the smallest amount that we can donate to agencies such as Caritas through the Project Compassion boxes that were sent home to all families will ensure that others have the opportunity to experience hope and optimism for their future and that of their children. If we don’t feel that we have the capacity to donate financially there are many other opportunities to enhance the lives of others. There are many not-for-profit organisations that are constantly on the lookout for volunteers or we could offer to assist a neighbour or friend who doesn’t have the ability to complete a task such as gardening or home maintenance for which they would have to pay a contractor at the expense of providing something else that they need. Again, I believe, we in Australia are very blessed and it wouldn’t take much of our time and energy to share these blessings with others.
RECONCILIATION
This very special day has finally arrived for the children from our school, St Maria Goretti’s school and from the Parish as they make their First Reconciliation this evening. We have been praying for all of them and their families over the past few weeks and they have been well prepared by their teachers so we look forward to a very prayerful and reflective evening in our Parish Church from 6.00pm.
YEAR TWO LITURGY
This will be held next Wednesday at 10.00am in the Year 2M classroom. Fr Quynh has informed me that, as he has an important meeting to attend, he won’t be able to be at the Liturgy and he has asked Deacon Albert to lead the Liturgy. We hope that many parents will be able to attend to share this special time with their children.
GRIP LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
Yesterday, the Student Leaders attended the Grip Leadership Conference at the Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre, along with 1500 other primary school students from many schools across Perth. They were totally engaged throughout the day listening to speakers and taking notes, interacting and sharing ideas with students from other schools, as well as involved in games and role plays. They students gained knowledge about how they can be effective leaders back at their own schools.
At the conference, they learnt about 4 destinations on the people pathway to be an effective leader.
A challenge was put forward to all the students throughout the day as to how they might be able to make a difference in their own schools in relation to any of these four destinations.
I know our Student Leaders had a sensational and very enjoyable day and have returned full of enthusiasm. They will now reflect on what they learnt from the conference and are keen to take on the challenge to make a difference at our school.

WOOLWORTHS EARN & LEARN PROGRAM
You can help our school by collecting Woolworths Earn & Learn Points. Just collect Woolworths Earn & Learn Points when you shop at Woolworths between Wednesday 1st May and Tuesday 25th June 2019. We will redeem these for awesome educational resources for our school. Simply pop them onto a Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheet and, once it is completed drop I it into school, otherwise just bring the stickers back to school and we will take care of them. You can also drop them into the Collection Box at your local Woolies, but ensure you put them into the Notre Dame School Box.
The more we collect, the more we can redeem. There are thousands of products available through the Woolworths Earn & Learn program, and we would like to get lots of new gear! Products in the range include resources for mathematics, English, science, art & crafts, through to sports gear, library supplies and more.
We are grateful for your support and look forward to a successful program. If you have any questions, please ask at school.
PARENTAL REQUEST
A family in our school would like to hear from anyone in the school who would be able to collect their two children from school and drop them at home in Parklands Estate (near Belmont Primary School) each afternoon. They are happy to pay a small amount in gratitude for this assistance. If you are interested in helping this family please contact the school office and the staff will arrange for you to contact each other.
CANTEEN
Our school canteen exists to provide a service to our children, parents and staff. Whilst this service will definitely continue into the future, there will be need for some changes as the canteen has operated at a loss for the past few years. We are currently looking into options to facilitate on-line ordering and hope to have this available early next Term. We will also be assessing the pricing of each of the items that we sell as some are currently being sold either at cost or below. We would also like to offer a wider range of products and specials but would only be able to do this if we have increased voluntary support from families. The tasks in the canteen are easy to do and any amount of time that may be offered would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Joanita or Sharmane in the school office if you are able to assist at any time.
MRS STAPLETON
We received the great news yesterday that Joanita continues to recover well and will be back in the school office from next Monday. I thank everyone for their prayers and best wishes for Joanita over the past couple of weeks and look forward to welcoming her back next week.
EVACUATION DRILL
We will be holding an Evacuation Drill next Wednesday so please don’t be alarmed if your children tell you that they had to leave class unexpectedly for a short time.
INTERSCHOOL SWIMMING
I look forward to joining our Interschool Swimming Team for part of the day next Thursday at Aqualife, Sommerset, East Victoria Park. The children have been training hard and we wish them all the best for a great day of competition.

Year two news
It has been a fantastic start to the 2019 school year for the Year 2 classes and we have been extremely busy.
RELIGION
The first Religious Education unit we explored in Year 2 this year was about the forgiveness of Jesus and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This teaches us how we can make good and loving choices. We explored the importance of saying sorry and showing love for others. The two Greatest commandments Jesus told us to follow were to Love our God with all our heart and all and soul and to love others.
We aim to carry out these commandments in our lives each day. Our Year 2 liturgy, next week, will focus on the theme: ‘Making Things Right.’ We have been planning and practising some wonderful new hymns for our class liturgy and are looking forward to sharing our liturgy with Deacon Albert and our families.
INQUIRY
We have been exploring about ourselves and we wrote questions to ask our parents about our younger years in order to write an autobiography. We also drew our own portraits. We learnt about mapping skills and using a key and then mapped out our own bedroom using a birds-eye view map. We are now looking into friendship and what makes a great friend. As part of this we have planned and then created an imaginary friend art piece.
MATHEMATICS
It is becoming clear that Year Two love Mathematics! Numbers are amazing! We have especially focused on place value, addition word problems and the relationship between addition and subtraction. We also have been enjoying learning lots of new mathematical games, including playing hands on games with dice, dominoes, MABs and cards. We have also been using our iPads to complete tasks and challenges on Mathletics and Prodigy.
EASTER
We are now busy making our Easter gifts for our families and have been enjoying the art work involved!
SWIMMING
This past two weeks we have been having fun going to Belmont Oasis to learn how to swim. Everyone has been impressed with the children's efforts and behaviour.
YEAR TWO’S THOUGHTS:
I like to learn English. I like Cars and Stars because it’s fun the way we are doing it on our iPads. I like to colour in when drawing and I like making our Easter presents. (Chelsea)
In the pool me and my friend did freestyle and we played games in the pool. My favourite was backstroke and gliding and survival backstroke. (Delilah)
In the pool I learnt how to do sculling and gliding and survival backstroke.
(Evie)
I’m enjoying making our work fun, for example when we made the expanding monsters. We expanded numbers up to a thousand for its body, then made its head out of colourful paper. We all made unique monsters. I like doing Art because I liked making our imaginary friends. First, we made plans about what we were going to make then we made our good copy of our imaginary friend. (Mila)
It was cold in the pool and my teacher was nice and I liked swimming. (Jack)
I have enjoyed doing Mathletics. I have also enjoyed Art because we have been painting and drawing imaginary friends and I have really enjoyed making special gifts for our family for Easter. (Christian)
Today I went to swimming lessons. I went into the round bit it was fun I did ring a ring a rosy that was so fun. (Kimberley)
At swimming I went to the cold pool and then I went inside and I did survival backstroke. (Breanna)

Week 10 – Book Sale for Caritas Australia
Book donations needed for the library!
On Thursday, 11th April, the Library with the help from our school community and Library Monitors, will hold a second-hand book sale at recess and lunchtime. ALL proceeds will go directly to Caritas Australia for their Project Compassion.
Old and slightly damaged books from the library and unneeded donations will be sold for 20c, 50c or $1. If you have any books that you no longer need at home, you are welcome to donate them to this worthy cause by delivering them to the Library on Tuesday 9th April (please not before this date due to the lack of space) before, during or after school so I can sort them. It’s a great way to recycle books while helping those less fortunate than ourselves.
Thank you for your support,
Mrs Sarmardin
