Flag Description
It was modeled after a Civil War cavalry guidon. The 17 stars on it represent becoming the 17th state . The colors red, white, and blue were taken from the United States flag. It is the only state flag to not be shaped like a rectangle.

History
Ohio was originally colonized by French fur traders. It officially became a British colony is 1754 following the French and Indian War. On March 1, 1803 Ohio became a state. Although no document was signed until 1953, by President Eisenhower officially making it a state. Ohio is sometimes referred to as "Mother of Modern Presidents" because 7 presidents have been born there. Ohio got its name from the Iroquois work "O-Y-O" which translates to great river.
Economy of Ohio
During the recession in 2007, Ohio got hit very hard. Ohio's unemployment rate basically doubled from 5.7% to 10.6%. In those years almost 300,000 people lost their jobs (my dad included). In recent years the unemployment rate has dropped by 3.7%. There are many key industries in Ohio such as Advanced Energy and Environmental Technologies, Aerospace and Aviation, and Motor Vehicle and Parts Manufacturing. Many of them include polymers, liquid crystals displays, and aerospace.

Politics in Ohio
Ohio is mostly ran by Republicans. They have the majority of 23-10 in the Ohio State Senate. Also in the Ohio State House of Representatives they hold control with 65-34 majority. Although the mayors of the 9 largest cities are Democratic. Because the parties are so closely split Ohio is considered the ultimate swing state. Also the Ohio electoral vote has been decreasing. It had 21 in 2000 then in the 2012 election it only had 18. Ohio will continue to have 18 electoral votes for the 2016 and 2020 elections. In July 2015, John Kasich, the current governor, announced that he is running for President. He is a Republican.
