Families that are in the VLA all year can email a picture of their student to their homeschool's front office on or before January 15th. Parents need to send a pic in the JPEG format. Students that were in the VLA at any time in the first semester will have a group photo taken by Inter-State in Q3 if they are in-person in the second semester. Inter-State will add a VLA Page to each yearbook and this is where all VLA pictures will be placed. VLA students will not be seen in any other part of the yearbook.
In order to ensure students are given opportunities to engage in art, music and physical education activities consistently, we are simplifying our K-4 VLA Related Arts’ plan for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year. Here are the details:
Students will have weekly opportunities to engage in various K-4 Related Arts activities.
These activities can be accessed through Canvas from their teacher’s page.
These activities are now considered diverse enrichment activities that families can use as additional engagement opportunities.
With these adjustments, students will not be asked to submit completed activities and therefore will not receive feedback or grades in K-4 Related Arts for the 2020-2021 school year.

Textbook Rental Information
FYI. I received FY21 Textbook Rental data on Friday, October 2nd. All full pay student amounts have been loaded to parent accounts, on their Textbook Rental parent portal. The portal website is www.k12paymentcenter.com. Once these were loaded, I followed up with an email to these parents about the portal and amounts. With that said, you may begin seeing parents bring in payment for TBR or ask to complete a TBR application for assistance. If payment is made, please send me your receipt books so I can update their portal. If they wish to complete an application for assistance, they can also do this at www.lunchapplication.com.
As for paper invoices, Technology Dept is still working on these to be generated and mailed out asap. TBR due date is 11/30/2020. If parents wish to request for an extension, please have them email me this request, so I can have this in writing.
If you can include any of this information on your school newsletter, that would be greatly appreciated.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Car Rider Information
We have made a slight change to the car rider procedure for this year. For both Pick up and Drop off, the car rider line will utilize two lanes to reduce congestion. See map below for details.
WHO ARE WE?
At Brookview Elementary school, we strive to develop and enrich students to their full potential. One of the ways that we do this is by focusing on critical thinking, content knowledge, collaboration, citizenship, creativity, and resilience.
Teaching and Learning
Teaching and Learning Emphasis
At Brookview Elementary, we want our students to be strong readers! There are 5 major components to reading. I will be sharing information on each of the 5 components of reading over the next several weeks. Let's start with fluency.
What Is Fluency?
Fluency is the ability to read "like you speak." Hudson, Lane, and Pullen define fluency this way: "Reading fluency is made up of at least three key elements: accurate reading of connected text at a conversational rate with appropriate prosody or expression." Non-fluent readers suffer in at least one of these aspects of reading: they make many mistakes, they read slowly, or they don't read with appropriate expression and phrasing.
Many researchers have found that fluency is highly correlated with reading comprehension—that is, when a student reads fluently, that student is likely to comprehend what he or she is reading.
So how do we teach it?
Teacher Modeling
Examples of teacher modeling include:
- Teacher-assisted reading
- Peer-assisted reading
- Audio-assisted reading
Key point: Teacher modeling involves more than just listening to someone else read. Students must be actively involved 100 percent of the time and in a multi-sensory way.
Parents, you play a major role here as well. Allowing your children consistent opportunities to read to you is key. Every night, have your children read to you. This helps your child become a strong reader!

SCHOOL DISTRICT PUBLICATIONS/NEWS MEDIA USE
SCHOOL DISTRICT PUBLICATIONS/NEWS MEDIA USE
The occasion may arise when the school district wants to recognize your child or your child's school. This may include your child's photo, your child's name or your child's work in district publications, newsletters, on school district websites, and in electronic/social media or in staff training videos. We may also want to tell the media (including newspapers, television, and radio) about your child's achievements. We never knowingly release information about a student to anyone who wants to use it for commercial/political purposes. However, we will honor your request to not include your child in these types of recognitions if you notify Mr. Coleman by email that you do not want this type of information released.
