Important News for You!
January 13, 2021
Hello Thomson Families,
It is hard to believe that we are almost to the end of the first semester, meaning we are nearing the half-way point of the school year. I am so proud of how the students are doing, your support, and the work our teachers are doing. Please be sure to note upcoming dates regarding a 'no school' day and an upcoming half-day for students.
As I shared in a letter earlier this week, I will be out beginning this Friday, January 15th for a medical leave and hope to return in mid-March. I am so pleased to have Mr. Ron Adam working in the building in my absences. Mr. Adam is spending time in the building this week getting to know newer staff, the students, and the 'running of' the building. While I will continue to monitor email, please note that anything that requires a response (via email or phone) should be directed to the classroom teacher, the office, or Mr. Adam.
While I will miss the students and staff greatly, I am not very good at 'just sitting' and hope to provide little videos and contributions during my time off recovering. Thank you again for your support!
Most Sincerely,
Natalie Miller, Proud Thomson Principal

Reading Tips with Mrs. Campbell-Using Picture Cues
Young readers need to rely on pictures to help them decode and read the words on the page. Using pictures is an important reading strategy, your child is learning to use here at school. Encourage your child to look through the pictures before you read and discuss what is happening in the story. As they read let them take a look at the pictures to get their mind and mouth ready to read the page. Just make sure when they are actually reading the words they are pointing to and looking at the words. Help them see the connection between what is going on in the picture and the words. Now is a great time to help them use the picture and the first letter of a hard word to make sure they match. For example if there is a picture of a dancer but the word on the page begins with a \b\ sound brainstorm other words that start with a \b\ sound that would make sense and fit with the picture like ballerina. Enjoy the pictures, talk about the story, and enjoy watching your child become a reader!
Happy reading! Mrs. Campbell
