Gayman Gazette
Together We Can! - February 2nd Edition
Looking ahead to Spring
I hope everyone stayed safe and warm during our snowy days.
While I imagine the last few days meant shoveling for adults, I hope they also meant snowmen, snow forts, and sledding for our students. If you happened to take a few snowy photos of your child(ren), consider uploading them to our Yearbook Photo Collection. The pictures may be used for our website, Gazette, and/or the Gayman Yearbook.
As you read through this Gazette, you may notice that snowy days are not the only exciting event. Looking ahead to spring, our students will have multiple opportunities to engage is some Gayman traditions. On February 12th, Mr. "Howdy" Hudak will host a school-wide Virtual Valentine's Day Bingo game using Teams. Later, on March 9th, Mrs. Milroy and Mr. Grace will host the Gayman Elementary School Spelling Bee. While this one is not associated with Scripps National Spelling Bee, the event still features a trophy and of course, a small prize for the winner. Finally, in late March, Mrs. Flanagan and the Science Fair Committee, will host our annual Gayman Elementary School Science Fair. This year, the fair will be featured in Flipgrid, so that students may upload short videos of their hard work! Parents and students will be able to virtually visit the science fair to share comments and words of praise.
Finally, did you know that it is Gayman Elementary School's 60th Anniversary? In late spring, we will open a time capsule and celebrate 60 years of students and learning.
Whether your child is attending school virtually or in-person, there are several upcoming events and traditions that are bound to make their school year special.
Here's to snowy days and a warm spring,
Kelly Carter

A Month of Service
In February, our students learn about responsibility as one of the "Gayman 5" character traits. Taking responsibility includes accepting the results of your actions, and showing compassion by taking action to help others. This month, we are showing compassion to a homeless shelter.
Our Student Wellness Committee is hosting a Winter Warm Up Sock and Toiletry Drive. Please donate if you can. Our drive will end on February 19th with Crazy Sock Spirit Day!

Let’s capture all of the hard work and fun of our Gayman students! Keep uploading pictures of your student(s) at work and play. To access this Forms Survey, please follow the link and login through your child’s CBSD login.
Please email Jennifer Kersey, teacher and liaison to GHSA Yearbook Committee, jkersey@cbsd.org with any questions. Thank you for sharing the memories!
Book of the Month: Responsibility
Every month, we feature a book of the month to showcase one of the Gayman 5 character traits. Mrs. Carter and Ms. Meier visit classrooms to share these special stories!
We are continuing with Responsibility, for the month of February. Our book of the month is But It’s Not My Fault. This story is focused on accepting responsibility. The main character learns not to blame others for mistakes or try to find fault, and instead practices taking responsibility.
Ask your son/daughter: "What does responsibility mean?" and "How can someone accept responsibility for his/her actions?"
Congratulations Boomerang Winners!
Social Emotional Learning & Second Step
Students learn about empathy and emotion management in February. We remind students to have empathy, identify their own and others’ feelings, notice and respect same and different feelings, and show compassion. Compassion involves saying kind words or doing something helpful to show you care how another person feels.
Parents may access the grade level home links to extend these conversations at home. To access these resources, parents and/or guardians of students in grades K-5 can click here, www.secondstep.org, create an account, and then enter the activation code. For parents and/or guardians of sixth graders, please access the website, www.parenteenconnect.org.
Absences
Online Absences: If a student does not attend class, the student will be marked absent until we receive the communication from parents. Note: If a student logs-in initially, but leaves the call or does not engage, the comment "Virtually Cut" will be added to the comments section.
Feel free to reach out to Christine Stevens (cstevens@cbsd.org) with any questions.
Live Streaming
Live streaming is available for any student who is absent more than 2 days because the child tested positive for COVID-19, or the child is a close contact of someone who tested positive. Live streaming is also available for any student who traveled outside of Pennsylvania.
Once a teacher is notified, we will make arrangements including a materials pick-up at school. Live streaming will begin on day 3 of the absence, or earlier if feasible. This instruction may vary slightly depending upon the academic needs and age of the student. Live streaming will end when the isolation period is complete. Note: knowing that the majority of students in the class are in-person, there will be times when the teacher is not in camera view.
Family Travel
If your child(ren) is traveling, complete a Request for Approved Absence Form. In compliance with the district's Health and Safety Plan, students who travel will not be able to return for a period of 10 days without testing, or after 7 days with a negative test on or after day 5.
Any questions about this procedure can be directed to Christine Stevens in the Gayman Office, at cstevens@cbsd.org.
Questions about COVID-19?
Our school nurse, Mrs. Sara Hedges, is here to help! If you have questions, feel free to email or call her. She can help with:
- Determine if your child(ren) is a close contact.
- Explain the isolation and quarantine process.
- Provide guidance for symptoms and management.
- And more! .... just ask.
Mrs. Sara Hedges email address is shedges@cbsd.org, or call the Gayman main office at 267-893-4350 to be connected to the Health Room.
