Parkway Middle School is now Parkway Sports & Health Science Academy!
Earlier this school year, Parkway Middle School began a new career exploration program in Sports and Health Academies.
Parkway's Principal, Jacob Ruth, is very supportive of having middle schoolers learn from high school students to "allow Parkway students to explore the diversity of future opportunities at colleges and in careers to engage them in deeper learning and the development of relevant skills. "
Under the guidance of Kathryn Welch, Helix's Sports Medicine teacher, this past Friday, a group of Parkway Middle Schoolers were able to come to Helix and participate with Helix teachers on 5 stations - splinting, suturing, stretching, taping, and spine boarding (the board thing that paramedics use) - students also were able to attend the Helix football game and see our Helix Sports Med in action with team doctors and college level Athletic Trainer interns.
Lindsay Nicoll, who teaches PE and the Sports Medicine class at Parkway Middle is a Helix 2006 graduate and former Helix staff member.
Once A Scottie, Always a Scottie!
Athletic Trainer Visits
Our Sports Medicine class was also fortunate enough to hear from Dr. Susan Ganz from PLNU.
Dr. Ganz has been a certified athletic trainer for 32 years and is also a professor for the PLNU MAT (Master of Arts in Teaching) program.
Currently she works as an athletic trainer for the rodeo and shared some amazing stories with our students.
Ed Pathway Guest Speaker (8/30/2022): Mike Love [MMHS Retired & Current SDSU Prof]
Michael Love retired in June 2020 after 27 years as a classroom educator and over 40 years of working with young people in many capacities throughout Spring Valley and various communities in Southeast San Diego.
He is the founder of Love Power Educational Consultants LLC., a group formed around a number of discussions among Black male educators that talked about two major themes: one, to support new, young Black male educators as they grow into the profession and, two, to encourage young Black males to consider education as a career and support them once they so choose.
Mr. Love met with our Education Pathway Studennts to examine the purpose of school/education as well as to consider how inequities impact student outcomes.
