This is your Captain Speaking!
Hello Birdneck Family,
We are excited to congratulate and welcome Shawn Krisch to our Birdneck family. He comes to us from Great Neck Middle school where he served as the ITS. He has also working at Chesterfield Academy and Green Run Elementary. Please take a moment to introduce yourself to him this week and help make him feel at home. I'd also like to congratulate Monica Scutchings on her new appointment as head night custodian at Laskin Road Annex. Thank you for your 16 years of service and 14 years as head night custodian at Birdneck! We will miss you but are happy to know you will continue to help out here on Sundays supporting Salt Church.
Our quarterly assessments are almost complete and our teams have been analyzing the data. The most efficient ways to remediate the deficits we find in the data are to work with students to set individual goals and to differentiate in small group instruction. During your planning days you will be able to share ways to do so with your colleagues. Our specialists are available to help with resources and strategies and are willing to come model those strategies in your classrooms. In order for them to be able to assist, I ask that you adhere to your language arts and math schedules so central office math and reading staff and our coaches can productively support your lessons.
Captain Out,
RV Yoshida
Shout Outs!
If you would like to give a SHOUT OUT to a colleague, it is as simple as sending an email to RV to be added to our Shout Outs each week!
Thank you to Mr. Leidy for mentoring children and checking in with them every day before school. You've really helped to make a difference particularly with one of our second graders.
Kuddos to Gail and Nick for organizing the event to kick off our learning garden and to our students, parents, teachers and Grace Bible Church members who worked so hard on Saturday ! What a wonderful community feeling we had as we worked together to beautify the courtyard and prepare the learning garden.
Hats off to all of our custodians who have helped to keep our flu numbers low by their thorough cleaning of student desks, doorknobs and germy surfaces.
Kuddos to Amy Adams for coordinating the blood drive this week.
Keep us in your thoughts and prayers
Particularly keep Jen Ewell and her family in mind this week as she has been supporting her mother who is now receiving care in Jen's home.
Staffing: Transfer procedures and Transfer Fair
Please know that some assignment changes will be necessary due to allocations, and the reduction of classrooms in some grade levels will occur. This year's Meet and Greet will be this Thursday at Green Run HS.
• In accordance with School Board Regulation 4-12.1, VBCPS will be considering priority and voluntary transfers simultaneously again this year. Teachers who are on Performance Improvement Plans are not to be selected as priority transfers and do not qualify for voluntary transfers.
• The “Transfer Meet and Greet” event is scheduled for Thursday, March 1, 2018, at Green Run HS from 4:30-6 p.m.
• Teachers who have been designated as priority transfers and those who are eligible for consideration for voluntary transfers may attend.
• Classified employees who have been designated as priority transfers and those who are eligible for consideration for voluntary transfers or promotions may also attend the Meet and Greet.
• During the week following the Meet and Greet and thereafter, interviews for priority transfers who indicate interest in vacancies will occur.
• Only teachers who will be on continuing contract during 2018-2019 (currently P3, PC, or C) and who are not on Performance Improvement Plans are eligible for voluntary teacher transfers.
• A teacher who receives a voluntary transfer must spend three years in that assignment before being eligible for another voluntary transfer. (A teacher accepting a voluntary transfer for the 2018-2019 school year will be eligible for a transfer in fall 2021.)
Please note that only the Department of Human Resources is authorized to make employment offers and provide official notification of approved transfers. Please contact your staffing specialist with any questions.

Still upcoming, from VBCPS Landscape Services, will be the building of 6 garden boxes. They will also be providing topsoil for all of our gardens. There will be a box for each grade level at Birdneck and we hope that we all can come together again to plant and grow our gardens and community. Thank you all again who participated!

Remember, we use the same teaching process for behaviors as we do for academics. Teach, Model, Practice, Reinforce(Eggs!), and Reteach. We look forward to seeing you and your students come up with some creative ways to teach, learn, and practice our school wide expectations! Thank you for all that you continue to do to support our students.
Go Eagles!
-Your PBIS Team
Thank you for all that you continue to do to support our students.
Dyslexia Training
As a result of the new VDOE license renewal requirement for all teaching staff to complete the Dyslexia Awareness Training Module (http://www.doe.virginia.gov/teaching/licensure/dyslexia-module/story.html) housed on the Virginia Department of Education website, VBCPS is requesting that all PreK-12 teachers who teach language arts must complete the forty-minute module during this school year, whether they are up for license renewal or not. Teachers who teach language arts are being asked to complete this to module by the end of the first semester, to ensure that they are knowledgeable when attending meetings in which dyslexia is discussed. As this is a new license renewal requirement for all staff, the completion of this task is being monitored by the Department of Human Resources, Office of Licensure.
