Principal's Message
Senators,
I feel very fortunate to serve the HBGPLA Community alongside all of you; the kids will be coming soon and it is my hope that "The Force" is with you and ready to welcome them all!
We will continue to strive daily to be accountable and develop students’ academics and socio-emotional well-being. I am humbled to serve as your principal for the fifth year and I am grateful for the challenges and accomplishments that we have shared together so far.
I look forward to continuing building with you the optimal educational environment for our students and school stakeholders. Join me and adopt our new school theme: Learning is Our New Hope by preparing yourself for our new "normal" with the right mindset and attitudes to change students' lives.
Keep advocating for students and striving for EXCELLENCE no matter the circumstances. We accept and adapt to any challenges... and together we will ACCELERATE LEARNING!
Have a restful weekend and remember that Here at Gonzalez… WE BUILD SCHOLARS!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR ED, DR. SHELTON
It is Game Time! Every Dallas ISD student, whether participating in the redesign, intercession, or base calendar, will return to campus on Monday, August 16th, 2021. We have the tremendous responsibility of putting on our capes to accelerate our campuses to a new level. Our teachers and students are counting on us to be the Superheroes we were placed in this role to be. We are privileged to have another opportunity to rise from the ashes, and we can't take this charge lightly. Regardless of what the history books have already written thus far, our future contains superhero performance and wins for the children of the Spruce and Wilmer-Hutchins Elementary Cluster.
A quote by Muhammad Ali states, "Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it." Children are brave and strong. They can handle high expectations for instruction and acceleration. They will have the courage to wear capes. Our kids will rise to the expectations we set for them. We have to have a Superhero mindset and refuse to take "NO" for an answer. We need to say no to failures, no to this child won't succeed, no to they can't catch up this year, and no to the thought that we as educators can't do what it takes to move kids forward. Let's rise this school year with excellence as the ONLY standard for our children. The 2021-2022 school year will be a historic comeback because of each one of you.
I look forward to seeing our Superheroes in action on Monday.
Practice like we've never won!
Perform like we've never lost!

Dear Senators,
Welcome back to school! It has been great to see everyone again, meet new staff members, hear about your summer vacation, and the time spent with your family.
I am honored to serve our community as the new Assistant Principal. Working alongside you in leading Henry B. Gonzalez PLA is a blessing. I know that together we will make our school one of the best learning environments to work in. I am looking forward to support you in making this another marvelous school year!
Last week, we had the opportunity to learn, reflect, and plan how we want to make our hopes a reality. The camaraderie, disposition, and willingness to help displayed from all our teams have been impressive. Your commitment to this community is evident and I am proud to be a part of it.
As we welcome our students on Monday, and get started on a new school year, keep your WHY in mind. You are meant to be here to educate our students, involve our families, and support your colleagues. The first week sets the standard on how your school year is going to be. Get to know your students, share your hopes with them, create goals together, and keep your eye on the prize. I am confident that our mission will be palpable with every action we take, and every word we say.
May your first week be strong!

Welcome Back!!!
It was really wonderful to see everyone in good health, good spirits, and with a growth mindset!
We are looking forward to greeting our kiddos next week to kick off the start of a great new year, "Learning is our New Hope". We are excited about how much our students will be able to learn this year with the use of the personalized learning model.
We will be diving into the components of blended learning very soon. Dates for P.D. will be coming soon. This will give you time to establish your procedures, routines, and expectations.
Have a Blessed Week! The Forecast is Bright!

Welcome Back Senators!
It has been a great week getting to see everyone engaged, collaborating, and ready to dive into this school year! I am excited to be able to continue to serve our community and can't wait to see how strong the teaching force is at HBGPLA!
I am going to keep this short and sweet, for this week, focus on culture systems, expectations, routines, and procedures. The tighter the classroom systems are at the beginning of the year, the easier it will be to push our students' cognition to the next level.
We will be walking this Friday to see how your classrooms are coming along and if there are any last-minute things we can help with.
Have a great first week with our kiddos and remember, We Build Scholars!

The HBGPLA Library of Wisdom
I am so excited to see everyone back and ready to learn and grow! I will be implementing Library Stations for all our students. Also, students have an opportunity to join a few organizations within the school community. If a student is interested in being a leader for the school, Student Council (3rd - 5th) is right for them. If a student from grades (3rd - 5th) loves mental math or Math in general and would like to be part of the Math Team, please contact me. Our scholars will have an opportunity to shine and explore in the Library. Here's to a GREAT NEW SCHOOL YEAR!! More information will come as the school year begins but if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at yzavala@dallasisd.org or 972-502-3314.
