ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER
Jay Maisel was born in January 18, 1931 in Brooklyn New York. He studied painting and graphic design in Manhattan's Cooper Union and also at Yale University. He didn't become a photographer until 1954. In 1966 he purchased in the historic Germania Bank Building in Manhattan that is a huge mansion, with 72 rooms over 6 floors. He lives there with his family and bought it for $102,000 when the house was a severe decline. It is now worth over $30 to $50 million. Jay has a simple taste for shooting pictures, maybe a nice light or shape that catches his eye he will take He also takes photos for Jazz covers, or magazines, and annual reports.. His awards are from the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame. His most known images is his photo of Miles Davis that appeared on his album, Kind of Blue, and of Marilyn Monroe.
After celebrating his recently 80th birthday, he said he has never been bored while doing his job, the grittiness and hectic city captured him instead of him capturing it. Others think his work is very entertaining and gifted in a unique way of capturing the city. I appreciate his work because its somewhat vintage and has a story behind his pictures. Having his photos based in New York is a hectic thought itself with entertainment thriving through.
